Add Aftermarket Subs and Amp to NEW (2021+) Tesla S / X / Y - DIY

Published 2023-09-20
So when I purchased my newest Tesla Model S, I was surprised to find they no longer used a 12v aux battery system but had switched everything over to a 15.5v enclosed system. This obviously caused a problem when I went to install my existing subs and amp that I had in my previous 2018 Model S and Model 3. But being the bass head that I am, I set out design a closed loop system that would run on 12v and would also be rechargeable. Check this video out if you're interested in what I came up with!

  • I used a kicker amp with auto-on one time in a situation where i could not get a remote wire. Worked great
  • This is awesome. I had no idea they sold batteries rated at 12.8 static voltage.

Hey Einstein, you're like a new god or president or king or something to me. This is genius. So no need for Audio Control LS1 or others to gain signal?

Kinda late reply but I have a slight improvement to offer so you will probably never have to charge that battery again. You can use a 8-40V converter to step down the voltage from 16V to 12V, on the other end just use a DC-DC 12v battery charger to top off the battery & provide power-on signal for your amp. Do remember to limit the charge rate to 8A or lower. I use mine occasionally at 10A and the inlet gets quite hot. Also for cold climate, AGM/SLA actually works better than LFP but if your place never get below freezing you can enjoy LFP. If you have a better platform to discuss outside YouTube like Discord or Messenger etc lmk.

Why not just use something like audio control LC2i it has the great turn on GTO function to turn on your amp when it receives audio signal?

Can you explain a bit more on the way you tapped into the sub to get the signal cables to plug into the amp? I'm doing my install tonight 😊
  • @user-pu3us2yu7w
What battery charger did you buy? Also, what about tapping into sub for signal?! You just used a y rca splitter?
  • @biga48197
So you used a hi/lo convertor to tap into the stock subwoofer?
  • @vbernabucci
What is the frequency range of the subwoofer signal? Just curious if it goes below 30hz.

Do i have to use a relay for a co stant 12v? I have everything setup but no sound . The lc1i gets power a d also the amp shows power but no sound out of soundwoofer any? suggestions 5:04

Which wires did you tap into for the left and right channel for the amp? I have a 2021 model y and just trying to install something like what you did but I'm lost on the wiring part for the left and right for the audio signal for the left and right channel which was not shown in the video do you have a video of that
  • @macrobin675
You didnt need the step down converter if you are using the relay., get rid of one, either the converter or the relay
  • I installed a sub. Hi have PCS code. 12v from under rear seat and 12v switched from left front. Should I add a extra battery?

I don't think I want a stereo system in a Tesla you'll just have to keep it plugged in all the time if you want to listen to it.
