Making Trolleys For The Narrow Gauge Workshop Railway. (Or Are They Dollies?)

Published 2017-02-27
The railway is still only half the length of the barn, but that’s still long enough for some fun with a little flat-bed trolley (bogey?).

Thanks to Finn, Rosie and Mike for testing, and the donkeys for their appreciation.

The wheels came from 17d-miniatures.co.uk/ (tell them who sent you - I may need a good deal next time I go shopping..)

  • Hello from Floyd County Kentucky. I absolutely loving watching this channel. I enjoy your hard working ethics & way of life. I would love to visit, help out, & bring my 11 year old daughter for a wonderful experience. If you ever want to visit the beautiful appalachian mountains of Eastern KY, you can stay here for free in our cabin.

Awesome work Tim! I respect your enginuity, thoughtfulness and re-use of things - to make things that are practical and so useful in your operation there. Inspiring for sure! Now, I'm off to the metal shop full of more ideas!!!

You are so clever, I love watching you work... very inspirational. Then you fill the base of your concrete slab with scrap metal! What! Aw jeez...
  • Kind of brings up the feeling of amazing that must have come with the first passenger railways in the 1830's. Almost feel you could sell tickets, not quite Space-X around the moon, but there is a delight & inherent pleasure in something so elegantly simple & useful.

This video was major inspiration in building my railway speeder. Although I used crane wheels instead of large scale locomotive wheels.

You have the absolute essesence of railroading and why they were invented. Put two trolleys with pivots under each end of a platform and you have a flat car. Make a bunch hook them together and tow them with a donkey and you have a railroad. All the rest is detail. My step father built a miniature amusement park railroad in the 1950s. It used small gasoline engines to haul up to 30 kids in several cars. As soon as I was big enough I did the maintainence and, as the things were simple, there was a lot, when I was about 8yo. By 14 i was doing all the work while himself drank himself into a stupor. It was amazing that a kid could push a thousand pound engine by myself. Railroads still fascinate me. Amusement parks not so much.

They look good Tim, I'm sure they will be plenty strong enough for a big log.
