Marika IS the Greater Will | Elden Ring Lore Theory

Published 2024-02-24
The Greater Will supposed to be the most powerful entity in all of Elden Ring... but it doesn't seem to do much of anything during the Tarnished's journey and all accounts of its actions are legends from ages past. Lets dive into my possibly crackpot theory regarding the GREATER WILL!

DLC HYPEEEE It looks like we will be getting more info about Marika’s rise to power, so I hope my theory is proven wrong or at least altered by this new information! Clarifications: I didn't mean to put words in Quelaag's mouth, if that's what it sounded like I meant. She just clarified her belief that Marika is in fact a god, and that inspired me to dive into the subject, so credit where credit is due. I said the Nox were banished underground and my reasoning for this was because of their crafting of the finger slayer blade and the black knives… I did not mean they are directly correlated, but that their creation of these items proves that they are opposed to the reign of Marika.

Big Correction I stated that the Kanji referring to the Greater Will in the Japanese translation was the same as referring to the Judeo-Christian God, but that is not the case. I believe I conflated two topics I am researching, but I am kicking myself for this error. The Kanji used for Greater Will can be interpreted as “Will” or “Great Will,” referring to the vigor or energy that drives one through life(as I understand it). It doesn’t change the main thesis of the video or the point I was trying to make in that section, however it should be noted that this was an error.

I dont think ive heard a theory quite like yours... and its absolutely incredible! You may have connected some new dots... 🤔
  • I wonder how Godfrey and Rennala fit into this. And if perhaps each separate half really loved their first spouse, their other half ended it, and ended up resenting each other / hating themself. Because both marriages end at the same time, right?

the symbol of grace is just a golden humanity from ds
  • Nah. Its stated in several places that Marika was a mortal of the Numen race that arrived from overseas. At some point she was chosen as an Empyrean by the Greater Will. When she shattered the Elden Ring she was punished and detained by the Greater Will. It is implied that the Greater Will was responsible for sending the star beasts to the Land Between including the malformed stars and the Elden Beast. Just considering the timeline of events and the circumstances under which we find her in the game, I don't think it is probable that Merika is the Greater Will. It doesn't make any logical sense without a lot of "what ifs?"
  • I think radagon is the result of the elden beast changing marika, and that Melina is the last remnant of Marikas original "self" that she saved when radagon finally took over.
  • Finally someone says what has been on my mind the whole time and is the only explanation that makes sense to me honestly. Marika is just too powerful. I did not know that Quelaag said this.

I don't rrally buy that the Greater Will doesn't care what order is established in the lands between. As you cited yourself, The Two Fingers need a ton of time to receive answers from The Greater Will. This is likely why it doesn't have time to do anything about the change in order at the ending of the game. But it probably did have time to screw the night cities after they started trying to establish their own order.

I like ur conclusion by I think a little differently we should have a discussion

broooooooo I’m so glad I found your video I spent the past few weeks thinking about this but I was starting to believe that that the Greater Will is using Marika as a vessel almost like a parasite Hence why the Elden Beast looks the way it does I also believe that Elden Beast created The dragons directly from its being But basically all of Marikas actions From leaving her husband getting with rennalla then merging with itself I feel like these are all actions of her being essentially possessed by the Greater Will
  • Yesi said ut was radigon who did that to marika. I never understood why ppl thought otherwise
  • @ETERNALXGAMEPLAY
I believe what we see in as the cover Is the greater Will shedding aspects Of itself

The more Elden Ring theories and explanations I hear the less I understand. However I must say the majority of theories seem to actively require explaining away lines that don’t match the agenda.
