Miriam also in hand quilting if you want smaller stitches you need a small needle such as a 10 or 12 hand quilting needle so you can get 10 - 12 stitches per inch. 😉 I used to use a hoop when I started hand quilting but now I like to quilt without a hoop. 😊

Because of your ruler videos using Dabline rulers I purchased a set, practiced and am making a quilt. LOVING the process.

Wonderful information, Miriam. Am I the only one who likes simple quilting lines? Sometimes, the quilting is so busy that it competes with the piecing; ones eye doesn't know where to look. Also..where on earth are you located? I'm in Northern California wearing 3 layers of Duluth Trading Co. clothing and you're sleeveless!
  • I love to hand quilt and am quilting a queen size carpenter star now, to keep it from overwhelming me I only quilt for about 2 to 3 hours at a time on it every other day, I do small stitches, I use WonderFil 80wt and a size 10 quilting needle. Also work on making other small projects to help with the "Igot something finished" mindset. Yes hand quilting takes time but is also rewarding!❤

Merriam hi. I just did a crazy quilt top. And I am binding it and using stitch in the ditch right now.😅

  • Hi Miriam, did you suggest cutting the batting and backing the same size? Then lay it on the top and quilt it?

I use crochet cotton when I tie a quilt and a curved needle.

The only time I like tying quilts is if my top is very wonky and doesn't quilt well.

If you have an embroidery machine, there are ways to quilt. I haven't done it myself, yet.
  • Very informative video. I do disagree with you on one thing. 99 % of the time eyelashes are not caused by hand/fabric movement but tension being off. If your top tension is to tight the thread pulls to the top and is very apparent on circles are at the tips of straight lines. That’s why we always test with circles and straight lines. It the eyelashes are showing on the bottom. Your top tension is probably too loose. You can test this for yourself by increasing your top tension or loosening your top tension. Eyelashes can be caused by hand fabric movement and speed but like I said 99% of the time it isn’t. On sit down long arms, mid arms or stand up long arms bobbin tension is always checked first and then a test stitch with circles and straight lines. Once you know the bobbin is correct and you’ve adjusted it correctly then all the adjustments are on the top tension.
