What Axial Seamount can teach us about predicting volcanic eruptions | Oregon Field Guide

Published 2024-06-18
Axial Seamount is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. It lies deep beneath the surface of the sea almost 300 miles west of the coast of Oregon. The "Oregon Field Guide" crew joined Oregon State University volcanologist, Bill Chadwick, and his team on a 2022 quest to discover what Axial can teach us about predicting volcanic eruptions elsewhere.

Chadwick, along with Scott Nooner, a professor of geophysics at University of North Carolina Wilmington forecast a 2015 Axial eruption about seven months in advance.

Half the people in the Pacific Northwest live within about 60 miles of an active volcano. Mount Hood, Mount Rainier, Three Sisters, Mount St. Helens and Mount Shasta are all characterized as very high-risk volcanoes by the U.S. Geological Survey. But only one — Mount St. Helens — has erupted in our lifetimes.

Having geologists as parents sounds like heaven... Oh the field trip/vacations! Looking at interesting boulders, rocks, and pebbles as a kid! What fun!
  • Excellent, interesting, beautiful! Watching from Southern Cal and wishing I were there! Thanks so much for videos like these and the Oregon Field Guide series!
  • I love Oregon, especially the coast. Thank you OPB for your excellent programming! 🦋🩷
  • What synchronicity. Just told someone a day or two ago that you geologists would be able to predict earthquakes and eruptions one day. The notion still elicits a skeptical huff. Now here I see you’re actively working on it. Super. Keep going. You’re in my prayers from now on for your great success. Blessings.

The Purple Octopus was so beautiful and a treat to see. Wow!
  • Super informative video about volcanoes on the seafloor. Thanks for producing this for us!!!!
  • I've been checking the Axial data activity uptick and wondered if we'd soon hear of an eruption. I'm looking forward to the next eruption. Thanks for the behind the scenes look at the research trip and the dedicated scientists/crew members.
  • Very interesting segment. Hearing how much lava comes out of the volcano and knowing that chunks of ice breaking off of a glacier can create small tsunamis, does the expelled lava create a small tsunami?
  • Leslie Nielsen, comedy actor, did an awesome documentary on underwater Sea Volcanoes of the Pacific Ocean, the Axial Seamounts. It was recorded in the 1980’s & sampled by Boards of Canada.

Awesome, just watched the Ocean Networks Canada expedition to the Endeavor Neptune hydrothermal vents. None of this was possible when I was young and now retired some how wishing I had parents in the field of these sciences. Oh well just have to watch it on YouTube.

Oh no. Cascadia and Juan De Fuca, are getting cranky. Damn. I was hoping it would chill in my lifetime.
  • @ResortDog
All that pumice that washed up last time was not oozy lava.
