Solo Mountain Winter Wild Camp on Ullscarf Summit my Final Wainwright in the Hilleberg Nammatj 2

Published 2024-03-10
After parking in Grasmere I make my way up to Greenup Edge via Grasmere Common, heading to Ullscarf summit which was my final Wainwright number 214 of 214. The weather is grey and views are in and out all morning. As I reach Greenup Edge I hit the snow line and freezing temperatures. Shortly after pitching my tent the weather changes again and I’m tent bound until the sun comes out and I’m treated to amazing skies. Night falls with a full moon which lights the snow up like a giant flood light. The night is very still but cold with freezing temperatures. As morning breaks I’m yet again treated to stunning skies with a spectacular sunrise whilst enjoying my first coffee of the day. After leaving camp I make my way down and over to Steel Fell a summit I’ve not been on for a few years. The sun is shining and views are stunning with warmer temperatures the lower I get, I really didn’t want this one to end. Amazing skies with stunning views and fantastic to revisit Ullscarf Summit and Steel Fell again.

It is indeed clag! I know it's either going to be cloud or hill fog mostly but you don't say it's clouded in or hill fogged in, you say clagged in, don't you? So it fits better... I think. Looked a super camp - I've not yet done Ullscarf (I've got about 20 Wainwrights left). Did you deliberately choose it as your last one or did it just emerge as you gradually knocked them all off? I agree about winter camping or winter walking in general. You're right in that it's harder but you also don't get the heat of summer, the bracken tramping, the crowds or the midges. Enjoying the videos, look forward to more.
