Squeezing A Turbocharged 2.0L AMG Engine Into A Mercedes 190E - FCP Euro's Golden Era Project Pt. 1

► DTM’s “Golden Era” was filled with shrieking, 10,00RPM+ monsters and over-boosted beasts that regularly pushed the envelope of what was capable from a four-cylinder engine. Thirty years later, AMG has built the M133, a fire-spitting, turbocharged animal that has wiped the floor with everything in its class. The 190E’s original engine was never going to cut it in the DTM tribute, but a modified, modern equivalent of the race engine sure will.

The 190E shell is finally ready for some clever engineering. The Merc's original steering, suspension, and braking components just aren’t going to be up to the task, so it’s up to Nate and Danny to figure out where they can update the tired Mercedes with modern AMG parts, including that engine. Slapped into a caged and stripped chassis with a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, the M133 should feel right at home, though not without some modifications first. Find out just what it takes to bring a 190E into the 21st century right here in part 1.

While I can still appreciate the love and dedication that goes into making a roll-caged track car to fling around circuits, I still vastly prefer a street car design with a proper interior. I mean, the 190e may have been a homologation special, but what really made it so special is the attention to detail and bulletproof engineering that went into the car as a complete package. The lines run under a false floor through the interior of the car to prevent damage and corrosion, the literal centimeters of foam beneath the carpets for noise isolation, the robust design of all of the interior components so they couldn't rattle or squeak, etc. Then there's the engine that just refused to go wrong unless you abused it terribly. By making a track-focused car out of it, you do lose out on what makes the complete package so compelling. I'd love to see a second iteration of this where you use the same restomod upgrades to the drivetrain, but you go further and upgrade the interior as well.

Great to see projects like this being undertaken in 2024 . We live in a world of 200+ mph super cars and even a mid range German family estate car has 400 hp but all painfully boring. A friend recently called by with his 850hp Chipped RS6 Avant. Yes quick but not exactly fun and obviously an Auto like all the modern stuff. About 20 years ago i did a similar project to this. I fitted the running gear from a damaged 190E DTM touring car into my 1954 MG Magnette race car.Definitely livened it up. Approx 380hp @ almost 10.000 rpm and proper 5 speed dog leg dog engagement close ration G Box. Not silly power but plenty for a 900 kg car and more fun that anything you can purchase off the shelf and super competitive in Hill climbs and sprints. The car manufactures are lost in a world of chasing BHP and the obsession with 0 to 60 times. 0 to 60 in 2 seconds and 250 mph does not always mean fun especially on a public road .Looking forward to watching progress .

I love this engine soooo much. I hope we'll see more swaps of this engine into more different cars.

Something that really stands out as someone from the UK is how clean the shell is. It's a late 80s car, built extremely well (obviously) and has been taken care of. Neat cutting skills too! Well done you guys, great project. Would be cool to try and retain AC!
