How This Poker Pro Won a $25k Platinum Pass [Satellite Strategy]

Published 2019-03-18
In this video you're going to learn crucial poker satellite strategy and get an incredible insight into gorilla maths that you can use at the table to win your seat to the bigger buy-in tournaments you only ever dreamed of playing.

MTT Poker School founder and head coach, Gareth James, is joined once again by poker pro, coach, co-host of the Chip Race podcast and now published author, Dara O'Kearney, for some in-depth hand analysis, as they discuss correct poker satellite strategy at this critical stage of the tournament - the bubble! They use Holdem Resources Calculator to analyse the spot and Dara gives you some incredible insight into some gorilla maths that you can use at the table.

Earlier this year, Unibet pro Ian Simpson battled it out for a Platinum Pass worth $25,000 and a chance to play in the Pokerstars Players Championship 2019 in the Bahamas at the Atlantis Resort and Casino! In this hand, Ian has a tough decision facing a 28bb jam from the Small Blind holding AQo in the Big Blind.

Dara also has a new book out called 'Poker Satellite Strategy'. Kindle and paperback versions are now available on Amazon:

Incredible content. Rarely you can find so brief content which is so useful. Thanks very much.
  • This is different than I would of played and good to think about. I'm playing these WSOP main event steps were there are huge jumps step to step.
  • I was playing bubble on a satellite (top 3 paid, 4 remaining) and we all had roughly 12-14bb. I faced an UTG shove and I had AJo which I folded and showed. Villain showed 56 suited and I told everyone I’m pretty sure I had to fold no matter what (especially because the other players weren’t super strong) to which the other players laughed. I ended up getting the ticket. Was that the right play with that many blinds? Given I did think he was shoving pretty wide there.

I actually won a platinum pass for the PSPC and played. Rivered Selbst on day 1, manage to get to day 2 and busted jamming JJ with 25bb from SB after HJ OR 2.2x and BTN called. If I would've know this by then.. I've would've just called and folded on the river or turn bet, knowing what came on the streets. Great analysis guys!

I hope Simpson has read and re-read Dara's book. I watched his twitch streams a few times when he was throwing a ton of money at Plat Pass satties (against some of the best players in the world), and it was kind of painful to watch what looked like ICM suicide attempts. He really hates folding! This is a great video, btw. :)

Gareth & Dara - Thank you so much for this video. I had a similar spot with KK on the BTN facing a jam by a VERY PATIENT UTG+1. At the time I decided to fold the KK and I did advance; however, I have always wondered if I made the correct decision. I am 100% the UTG+1 had a VERY STRONG range, perhaps even AA. A pro, Ryan Laplante, chimed in letting me know the fold was OK (assuming I could fold into a seat and I could). Here is a link to the discussion I posted in search of answers: https://www.cardschat.com/f59/survival-tournament-would-you-fold-kk-393957/
