Caterham were here for the recent F1 GP at the Nürburgring. They brought with them the engine and transmission test mule for the new R620 supercar. This little green machine started life as 'just' an R500, before it got the new SaDev sequential gearbox and the supercharged R620 motor. I was only allowed one lap and I've got no prior experience with a flat-shifting sequential, so I didn't go too crazy, but it was still quite quick...

"not going too crazy" and being airborne numerous times somehow contradict each other. It was thrilling to watch, thanks for that!

"I didn't go too crazy" catches air at the Flugplatz Yeah, you were taking it easy.

Wow! Just... How would you like to be remembered by history? During WW2 you fly a fighter for the RAF. Between 1952 and '57 you make several 'trials cars' and then you get the urge to go circuit racing with a mud plugger. That leads to #7, which is lower and more successful and suitable for asphalt. So you start to produce #7 kits, that people can buy and build one for themselves. Then you start a racing car company, and begin building roadcars to finance it. For 20 years or so, you take on formula 1 and Indy and everything else. Then you sell off the #7 jigs and stuff, to a company called Caterham, to finance some other racing project. From then until now, Caterham keeps producing your car. Ok, slight revisions and improvements, the engine they are selling today is a wee bit better than was used in the early '60s, true. But a car that is basically 57 years old, is still the quickest and most exciting piece of kit on the market. Wouldn't you be proud to be remembered for that? RIP Mr Chapman. You were one of the greatest race car and sports car design geniuses we've ever had, perhaps the greatest.

  • That was bloody amazing to watch. As I'm lacking all skill and money in the world - at least I can pretend to be this good in Project Cars (:

Really dig how fast your going and still have the wherewithal to rev match on the down shift. Pro level.

You didn't go too crazy? I want to see you going crazy then if your "casual" driving is this good
  • @NIKEV10
I need a dark room and a brew after watching that.. brilliant.
  • @EVZebra
haha those other cars really did look like they were looking for some where to park.
  • @LackyUno
I will say in this video, the car is the "green hell"
  • @Smittyschannel
Going that fast I would want a box cage, not just a rear rollbar setup. That thing is stupid fast..... well done
  • @TheIllestMVP
great run! that is a demon of a car. sounds phenomenal

Great skills. Nice drive. Lovely car. None of those annoying things to take away the driving experience.
  • This car looks like one of the purest driving experiences there is. If I could afford one, I may personally go for one of the lesser models with a manual, but that's just me. But getting behind the wheel of ANY Caterham seems truly special in ways most cars can only dream of being
