Elliot Page says he experienced a mixture of feelings when he came out as transgender on an Instagram post in 2021.

“I felt utterly elated and beyond grateful to finally be in a place where I could accept and love myself and do what I needed to and wanted to,” the 37-year-old actor, director, and LGBTQ+ activist told the audience at the 2024 TIME100 Summit in New York City on Wednesday.

After a soulful live performance by Leslie Odom Jr. and opening remarks from TIME CEO Jessica Sibley, Page sat down with TIME Contributing Editor Sam Lansky to kick off a series of panel discussions featuring the global TIME100 community.

It’s been three years since the actor graced the cover of TIME magazine alongside his pet dog to share—in full for the first time—his journey towards publicly announcing that he is a gender non-binary transgender person.

“That cover, which was shot by a trans man, Wynne Neilly in Toronto, and having that opportunity, it meant so much,” Page said. “It was also very overwhelming, as you can imagine,” he said, adding that he was experiencing trans joy alongside feelings of anxiety, grief and anger.

in all truth ellens career is over now, wont ever get another role. just the truth.
  • "its been an absolute joy", she says as she looks like she just watched her mother get taken off life support. How can anyone watch this and have ANYTHING positive to say? Its a disgrace and my heart bleeds for what happened to this woman before she had a chance to properly think it through.
  • Well this is depressing to see. A healthy body has been destroyed. They look so unhealthy now. So sad.

She is an actor. She knows how to talk on camera. The person sitting there now behaves so differently and looks down when speaking. Something is so off.

if people's comments get deleted here... it's not youtube. it's TIME. you can't say ANYthing. doesn't matter the context. context is important. but if ANY word is not of their liking, you are deleted.

Body language radiates pain and insecurity. Tension abound. Rod straight spine, shoulder girdle collapsed, hands grasping protectively when they’re not upturned in Believe Me gestures. Eyes downcast. You could almost mistake it for guilt

So many hateful comments. We don't have a clue what's going on in Elliot's life, neither is it any of our business. Have some compassion people.

totally a man and not a depressed lesbian
  • wow so many "BoDy LaNguaGe SpeCiaLisTs" on the chat he have the exactly same way to talk and behave as before. I had always watch his/her interviews and I see no difference. Just the voice is different and cracking a little bit you guys are projecting your own thought on what you see. The thought is "his transition is a lie and he's sadder than before". Well, that's all you, guys

He’s just like me! 💛 it’s amazing to see someone power through all these difficult questions with such grace and strength. I remember when he first came out, it was like a ray of hope to me. It still is and I’m still so grateful to live in the same world at the same time. Power on my dude 💪
  • Hormones effect cognition, slowing the thought process in some, & knowing how any statement can be used against someone, I believe Page is simply being thoughtful about answering! Page is quite articulate here! I've noticed a change in skin tone, along with dark rings under the eyes etc, unfortunately that goes with the territory! Remember folks, this is Pages puberty years in terms of transition! Any parents of teens out there would remember transition from male child to teen male.. Comparing Pages complexion before transition to now is not helpful. Female hormones soften a face, as in male to female, and hardens a face as in female to male transition.. Pages body language suggests a little lack of confidence, but, realistically, Page knows a lot of eyes would be searching for 'signs', which is entirely the case as evidenced by this comment section! I felt the interview went well. The answers Page gave were thoughtful & well articulated insights into where Page is currently at.. Page may need a little coaching on physical presentation, ie: posture etc.. but, hey, overall i thought it was a very informative interview!
  • This makes me very sad. We are watching an excellent actor desperately struggling to act happy.

What the hell is wrong with him? You can hear him still suffering, sad and feeling sorry for himself when now he should be happy about his transition.

Its easier to fool some people, than it is to convince them that they have been fooled.
