Getting The Perfect Date Using Hinge Feat. Justin McLeod | Executive Exchange

Published 2023-12-22
On this episode of Executive Exchange, Hinge founder and CEO Justin McLeod sits down with host Ruth Umoh to discuss the online dating business, AI and how he transformed the company from a less than $1 million revenue business in 2017 to one that's projected to rake in a whopping $400 million by the end of 2023.

Justin reveals some useful tips for people who are using the dating app to find their ideal match as well as breaking down the philosophies of what works and what doesn't for each individual user. Compatibility and the use of AI is what Justin thinks will improve the app over time for users looking to meet their partner.

Justin also talks about the beginnings of Hinge, starting it in 2011 while he was attending Harvard Business School and slowly over time making changes to the app that now is the number three dating app worldwide.

Finally, Justin takes a look at Ruth's Hinge profile and shares his thoughts on what he likes and what she can improve on her matchmaking journey.

I've always believed that when discussing online dating the MAIN attribute it comes down to is your profile pictures. It really is as simple as that, if you're not very attractive or generally photogenic people are gonna scroll straight past your profile without even giving the provided info about you a chance! If someone's not attracted to your provided image then it's game over and that's a simple truth...
  • as someone who has found success on dating apps, I'll tell you what's wrong: 1. the coffee bean water thing, while witty, is a negative anti-euphemism, and the vast majority of people drink coffee so you're off to a bad start. I've also seen several profiles use it, so it's unoriginal. 2. bikini photos indicate you're promiscuous, the photo of you in the dress is fine 3. looking specifically for europeans, even with the or, is also a turn off. Also, funnily enough, the vast majority of Europeans drink coffee/espresso religiously, even more so than Americans 4. he's right that having face turned away photos is bad- that's how female instagram influencers appeal to other female instagram influencers. but it's incredibly hard to see what you look like. closer up is better

Justin, are you familiar with the r/hingeapp subreddit? It could be super useful and a great companion to the app, but it's moderated by an an asshole named wokenthehive who just treats it like his personal dating blog.
