Are Fat Bikes Cool?

Published 2018-09-02
We know that Fat Bikes are fast. We've seen Blake Samson do incredible MTB tricks on a fat bike. They're comfortable, grippy, lightweight and can do pretty much anything any other mountain bike can do. But are they cool?

"Do you think people would judge you for riding a fat bike?" - "Ye, and they can all piss off!"
  • @byronmiller4743
Here in Alaska, everyoneā€™s second vehicle is a fat bike lol
  • @frontierlife161
I love mine, that rumble of the tires when You hit the main road, sounds like a monster truck
  • @11UncleBooker22
At 52 how cool am I gonna look anyway? Think I'll just do what makes me comfortable.

100% fat bike convert. I sold my Whyte T129 6months after buying my fatbike (which Id bought as a 2nd 'winter' bike). I didn't use my full sus once after buying the fattie - it just put a bigger smile on mile face. I've now raced xc, and enduro on it, podium'd and regularly beat my old full sus strava times. They may not be the best at everything, but they certainly aren't the worst. More important to me is that no other bike will keep me smiling as much when I ride it.
  • Being 52, myself, is really cool because I don't give a crap anymore what is cool and what isn't. I appreciate my insight, self confidence, and convictions more than what I drive, wear, own, or call a vacation spot. I have 4 bikes. One is a fat bike. It is a riot. I will never get rid of it.
  • You picked an excellent dude to review the bike, the fact he was as honest as he was, and willing to change his opinion (slightly) shows his character. Good stuff.

Everyone else is missing out!!! I'm currently building my 4th fatbike, 2018 Kona Wozo, and I can't ever see myself going back to a skinny tire'd bike. The shear joy these massive tires bring is unparalleled. The end all bike for me is a Foes Mutz. I can't wait until I can afford to build one.
  • Guess it depends where you live. Up here in Canada fat bikes are becoming very prevalent simply because you can use it all year round with all the snow/slush. Are they "cool"? In winter time when you're biking past the cross country skiers. Yes In summer time when you're biking past mountain bikers. No In spring when the trails are a sloggy mess of ice/slush/mud and you bike past a mountain bike that is stuck. Yes.

I live in Finland and I needed just one bike to ride races and commute. To me fatbike was best choice to cover all my rides. The best bike for snow..
  • @carlholman2993
For Minnesota winters there is no better option for snowy single track! And no, would not replace my trail bike with a fatty. Lucky enough to have both.
  • @XxPureKhaosxX
Blake's fat bike is lighter than my trail bike. yikes
  • @firemanfitzy
I just won a fat tire bike in a raffle! I took it out for a quick trail ride, and loved it! Canā€™t wait to ride all winter.
  • @tschom.6575
My Farley 5 is my one and only bike. It does everything for me. I ride Trails, Parks, Jumps, and every day it brings me to work. Sure, I'm not Blake or Neil, but it's the right choice for me. I always have loads of fun with it. Are they cool? Who cares? My legs are not shaved, my bike cloths dont't fit colourwise, so - I don't care. And I give a sh... what all the others say. Period.
  • @jimjr4432
Well I'm 73 and have road and MTBs, just got a used fat tire bike, and it just looks weird! But when I ride it (no suspension, 4" tires) it just seems to be a real kick. It is just fun and I just can get off road shoulders, cross country as in no trails, I just blow through sand and just grind up hills and grades. "Grind" is the operative term and when I hit a rock or three, 8-10 psi in the tires, I really can't seem to feel them. I have a Salsa, Mukluk alloy frame, not sure the year, say 2012ish? I must say I'm having more fun on it than my Foundry Broadaxe 29er hardtail. But I'm keeping both for sure.
  • @AA-vj3si
I loved this video! It so much more ā€˜personalā€™ which makes it enjoyable to watch (not that gmbn vids are boring)
  • @tamserenity
I live in Minnesota and lots of people ride them around here in the winter.
  • @teamoldguy3138
I love mine. And YES it's cool as cool can be! Fast and friendly! Don't care what others think about them, but do suprise people when I pass them on the trails riding mine!
  • @scarcatch
weekend rider's, now i feel more at home on GMBN. Great, thanks
  • @nathanmorse3726
