ITOH PEONY PLANTS: Best Peonies in the Garden

Some garden tools I love: amzn.to/3M66Sru

Peony Flowers! Peonies are easily one of my favorite plants in the garden. Their flowers may not last a long time but they simply can't be beat! But have you heard of Itoh Peonies? These hybrids are a cross between Garden Peonies and Tree Peonies. And the result is a peony that you will fall in love with.

In this video I detail all you need to know to grow Itoh Peonies with success! I go into detail about where to site them, the type of conditions they need, and how to get them planted, both from a potted plant and rhizome. #itohpeony #peonyflower #peony

  • I love peones and this video was very helpful for me. Thank you for giving explanation on the rhizome and how deep to plant. I have two peones that haven't flowered in full shade and now I know to transplant them to a place with more sun.

Great video, full of relevant information. I can't wait to get my new Itoh peony in the ground. Hardest part will be waiting for the flowers! I subscribed, keep up the good work.

I don’t speak Japanese, but my mom lived in Japan for a few years and pronounces itoh the same way you do. For what it’s worth 👍🏻

Hi Devin, I love my ITOH peonies and I agree that planting potted Itoh peonies is the easiest way to plant them.
  • I am watching this video because I bought my first Itoh P today at HD. Bare root, for $15. Very good size, weights 2-3 pounds and the eyes are starting to sprout. I am so excited!
Sounds like I made a great purchase!! 🥰
  • I have one Berry Garcia and I love it. Perennial like in my zone 5 garden.

I really enjoyed this video: How to plant a peony, transplant a peony rhizome, and a few pro tips about planting depth, sunlight, and such. I'm in zone 8a, and since it can get 110 degrees here during the peak of summer, I'm thinking part/morning sun at most. I was eyeing some Cora Louise Itoh Peonies at a nursery today and they're fairly expensive at $119 each. I wanted to do some homework before committing. I like that they get 3x3 feet and therefore seem safe to plant near one's foundation.
  • Heyy Devin, so I stumbled across your channel when I was looking for amaryllis care tips a while back. I've learned tons through your videos so I want to thank you! Funny thing is, my mother in law gifted me an Itoh Peony yesterday that she bought through OVC. I searched the recommended video listed on the back of the info book, "Itoh Peonies with Devin Wallien" and when your video came up, I was pleasantly surprised! You mention your family business occasionally in videos, and I had no idea Roberta's was in fact your family business, haha.

When I searched for amaryllis care, my first amaryllis was not from Roberta's, but my MIL gifted me one a few weeks later that was from Roberta's, and I just followed the care I originally learned from you before. It's too funny that I did in fact watch the care video, I just didn't know it was connected to Roberta's at the time. That amaryllis was the largest and most beautiful out of the 4 bulbs I ended up having last year.

Anyways, sorry for the long comment! I just was super stoked to see your video pop up when I searched for Peony care. I'm sure my MIL will continue to gift me beautiful plants from your business and I'll always check your care videos!

    Many thanks again 🙏🏼💚

Great video, Devin. I grow the Itoh and two "regular" peonies, and they do well in zone 7a, which can a bit tricky for some plants since it gets very cold and moist in winter to very hot and dry in summer - all while being in hard clay soil. Challenging environment and the Roberta's peonies perform like champs!
  • There may be a chance of finding an Itoh peony at reduced prices at Home Depot. Hoping they care for the plant properly, if you can wait until after the blooms fade, your store might put the Itoh's on clearance for half price. Since SRPs are a whopping $50 or $60, it's worthwhile to do some scouting.
