In any given year, the Singapore reserves contribute up to a fifth of government spending. This sum is merely half of the annual returns that come from investing the huge capital sum that makes up the country’s reserves. While a chunk of it is invested in gold, Singapore’s proverbial pot of gold is actually invested in a wide range of assets all across the globe, thanks to an army of people from three entities – each with a slightly different mandate.

Through exclusive interviews with top leaders and insiders of ‘Singapore Inc’, we reveal what exactly makes up the republic’s reserves, the unique infrastructure that the city state has built to guard and grow its wealth, the ‘hidden’ role that these reserves play not just for the island’s economy, and answer the million-dollar question: Why are the reserves such a huge secret?

They should make it mandatory for all students to watch this documentary. A lot of lessons to learn and it's not just about how the reserves are managed. We should always prepare for rainy days, be mindful of our spending and be forward looking.

I'm amazed at the production quality and how understandable the writing is. As someone without a finance background, the analogies used in the video were very useful help me understand this complex topic. Love how this documentary has come out nearing PE2023. It will definitely be good contextual knowledge to understand while scrutinising the presidential candidates. Keep up the good work, CNA Insider!

Sg is so blessed by its 1st generation of leaders led by founder PM Lee Kuan Yew and its dedicated of wise, bold visionary team mates. They have done so much for Sg that our current govt abd ruling party is able to continue to build on their legacy. May God continue to bless SG and its leaders to a even stronger united nation for its future generations.

We must thank our forefathers who designed and created such a wonderful financial scheme to protect Singaporeans in good and bad times. We must also thank our government for executing such a scheme with wisdom, integrity and reliability. Lucky for all Singaporeans 👍👍👍

I always admire that Singapore is run by a team of capable politicians. However, one should never take it for granted because every country will have its prosperous and doom period. May the next prime minister be as wise and capable as Mr Lee Hsien Loong.

14:13 the Singapore government holds 222 tonnes of physical gold. Remember in 1999 Gordon Brown sold 395 tonnes of UK gold. I believed Singapore will continue to buy more gold when opportunity presents itself. Very smart govt.

Watch this with my kids, as a fellow Singapore! Thank you for sharing with us this amazing video. Understand a lot more about our reserve. This video should be part of Singapore National Education!

Probably the most important documentary ever produced
  • @xLeonZai
Amazingly made and educational. i am amazed by the information revealed for public consumption. i hope people absorb these outside of any political beliefs and appreciate how much is being done back end by the amazing people in the various companies managing the sovereign wealth of Singapore ensuring it's longevity

i learnt SO MUCH in this video. kudos to the CNA team once again for giving us quality content. when i was a child, CNA was just a channel that the adults will play as background noise and i wouldn’t understand a single thing the presenter was saying and all i saw was the stocks going up and down. i feel CNA content has definitely grew over the years and now makes complex concepts into more personable and relatable content that an everyday person like me can understand. thank you so much!!

CNA Insider never disappoints. Thank you team for doing what others can't, even if there are some lines that you unfortunately can't cross.

Our current state stands as a testament to the virtues of a fiscally responsible government. Through strategic prioritization of savings, we’ve managed to achieve remarkable progress, setting ourselves apart from those nations whose governments have squandered their resources. This approach has translated into tangible benefits, such as robust infrastructure, social programs, and a stable economy. However, the prospect of an administration characterized by recklessness raises alarming concerns. A single term under such leadership could swiftly erode the foundations we’ve painstakingly built, leaving us on the precipice of irreversible decline. The potential consequences are dire — economic instability, burgeoning debt, and a prolonged period of recovery that might challenge even the most diligent efforts. Therefore, safeguarding our achievements necessitates not only our appreciation for fiscal responsibility but also our vigilance in selecting leaders who uphold these principles. The path forward must be one of continued prudence, lest we risk squandering the legacy we’ve worked so hard to create.

This documentary of the Singapore Reserves truly shines a light on the quality of the team/people managing it. It is a wildly successful story to be proud of. I live in Malaysia, a country that I love. When our ministers and elite authorities here can hardly string a coherent sentence together, it chokes me when I try to compare us with Singapore.
  • @touchofgrey5372
Probably the most competently managed and governed country on earth!
  • @JoJoAnne
CNA did a very good job in producing and narrating this series. Gold is a good commodity and many buy it as investment. It is safe. In hard times, it is more valuable where money is worthless in times of war. You can use it anywhere in the world.
  • @TheReiz88
The government cannot work without the smart people involved in all of this. Kudos to all the contribution from the singaporeans and all of us! Majulah singapura!
  • @kimito7521
Love this series. Informative to the common person on the street (like me), explains simply the economics behind Singapore’s unique monetary policy approach, and also the roles and relationships between different entities e.g. Temasek vs GIC. Great contextual knowledge in the lead up to PE '23 on evaluating the fit of the candidate and as holder of the 2nd key. (Side note: Also love the football analogy @16:45 and the throwbacks of old school commercials @25:50 for Singtel, SIA, and DBS!!)
  • @AlfariziZakaria
Singapore always surprises me, a country designed by intelligent people 🇸🇬♥️
