Kona Snorkeling at Kukio - Best Snorkeling on Big Island Guide

Published 2022-08-21
One of the lesser known Kona snorkeling spots Kukio is also known as Kikaua point. It's an exclusive housing community with access granted to a limited number of vehicles. If you arrive and there are no spots you must turn around.

Once you arrive at the parking lot you'll walk down a long cement path to the beach. There are showers and restrooms. Several shade trees are scattered about allowing beachgoers to avoid the sun. The first thing you'll encounter after the restrooms is a secluded cove. This is an excellent shallow relaxation spot for kids and adults wanting pool like conditions. You can reach the open ocean from here but at low tide it's not recommended.

If you continue on there's a shady grass patch near the water that is great for chillaxing. You can enter the water just past that spot. If you continue along north with the water on your left you'll eventually encounter sleeping sea turtles on the beach during certain times during the tidal cycle. Watch out that's not a rick you're about to step on!

The snorkeling here is quite good. It's a marine protected area so the fish are abundant and not as shy as fish in other areas. Is it the best snorkeling on Big Island? That's for you to decide. We like the variety of shallow and deep reefs and the abundance of fish. The point offers some protection from ocean swell which we like.

Watch the "Bonus" content to find out about where you can go eat afterwards. We discuss the pros and cons of the snorkeling and the beach and enjoy one of the best kept restaurant secrets on the island. In out discussion we rate Kukio beach snorkeling a 7 - 8.5 out of 10. Is it the best snorkeling on Big Island? Not likely but it's pretty solid!

Two Step Beach and Captain Cook monument are two of the best snorkeling spots. Beach 69 is a great place to swim and hang out for the day.
