It’s Episode 3 of Llandow Laps, and Chris Harris is braving some typically Welsh weather to see what the world of hot hatches has to offer. First, we have the widely praised Toyota GR Yaris, which has charmed the press and enthusiasts alike with its potent 261PS turbocharged inline-three and surefooted four-wheel drive system.
Due to a manufacturer no-show, the initial stand-in entry is something that features lightweight polymer construction, a two-wheel layout and, you might say, ‘ample storage space’.
Fortunately, thanks to a last-minute substitution courtesy of a certain Mr. Cooper, we got to pitch the GR Yaris against something small and high-revving after all. Given the conditions, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Toyota was a clear favourite – but it might just have its work cut out against the unexpected contender.
So, get out your best sweeties and settle in for another exciting episode of Llandow Laps; complete with added detailing tips, strong opinions on bell peppers, and the automotive equivalent of saddling up a Labrador.

Llandow Laps is our exciting new series, hosted by Chris Harris at the 'legendary' Llandow Circuit in South Wales.

The concept behind Llandow Laps is to pitch two vehicles from the same genre against one another to see which is faster; and the first series will feature grand tourers (with a twist), hot hatches, supercars, roadsters, and restomods.

As well as showcasing the cars’ performance on track, the films will also reveal the behind-the-scenes work required to produce the end result, introducing some of the personalities from the Llandow Circuit and the Collecting Cars team.

The science bit: All cars featured in Llandow Laps will be unmodified from the specification seen on screen, they’ll be running with a full tank of fuel, and they’ll be fitted with sensible tyres available on the road cars from the factory.

Lap times will be recorded, and a winner of each head-to-head will be revealed – although there’ll be more focus on the driving experience and character of the cars than on the numbers alone.

That Mini is the ultimate expression of "stop making stuff needlessly heavy". Imagine thrashing that round the old circuit with a full field on a glorious Revival day.

Love this!!! It's the real, raw stuff like this that got Chris the top gear gig, and it's also why we all wanna keep watching Chris being himself!!! Funny, honest, and a genuine car geek making great videos for fellow car geeks to watch without the meddling of network TV!!! Love it!!

Owned a modded Aussie Clubman S in the early 1980s, so this brought back memories of how much fun a Mini Cooper S can be! The original 1100cc motor had crapped itself, but as I was looking for a Mini to swap over all the gear from a battered 1310cc Mk1 Cooper S donor-vehicle, it was ideal! Until I fitted the auxiliary fuel-tank, widened-rims & flared guards, it was a real sleeper! Along with installing negative-camber adjustable suspension-arms, & front-shocks on the hydrolastic-suspension for phenomenal handling, I also fitted dual 1.5" SU carbs, worked head, rally-cam, extractors/headers, straight-thru exhaust, plus a Rover brake-booster to help stop those Cooper S disc-brakes! Once while I was driving on a quiet, straight, & flat section of 110 kmph motorway, one of my two passengers asked; "How fast can it go? So, after quickly reaching over 160 kmph (approx. 100 mph), I decided it was probably wise to slow down as we were quickly approaching the vehicles that had previously been quite a distance ahead! However, considering I only had two passengers because the boot along with the rest of the space was taken up by our luggage, being able to exceed the proverbial 'Ton' was quite impressive (despite the noise threatening to destroy our ear-drums)!
