Some creativity is celebrated in the Pokémon world, but often there are so many new creatures and game mechanics thrown at us that we can overlook certain design choices, leaving Pokémon with solid effort to be under-appreciated. And this can occur in some of the newest iterations or with some of the ones that been around for decades, so let's just look around and see which Pokémon are secretly hiding great ideas that we just don't notice enough!

never in my life have I ever thought of seeing a picture of Ambipom with the word "outstanding" next to it

Oricorio is my favorite Pokémon. The way it incorporates Charles Darwin’s study into finches and the way they also adapt to the nectar of different islands, and also adapts it into various styles of world dance is just bounding with creativity. Barely anybody spares any thought for these genius birds because they’re so terrible in battle, but I absolutely appreciate the thought put into their design.
  • Seeing you group Ambipom with the likes of Machamp and Graveller really made me think of other unofficial Pokémon groupings like that. Like Lucario and Volcarona and Cofagrigus all sharing Egyptian themes. And the Rotom forms and Chandelure and Avalugg and Klefki being household items and/or furniture. I'm sure there are more!
  • Lurantis is, to me, an absolutely perfect Pokémon in terms of concept and execution. Real-world orchid mantises disguise themselves as flowers to attract smaller insects as prey. Lurantis completely flips that on its head, being a flower that disguises itself as a large insect to ward away small insects that would try to eat it. I've seen people confused at it being a pure Grass-type Pokémon, but looking at its lore and inspiration explains it well.
  • I will say that I liked Applin, and then when I learned that Applin is a Wyrm in an apple, then I fell in deep love with it. This was a great video!
  • The Nacli line's names and design are simple but clever. The cubic structures are actually based on the real world crystal structure of salt, which forms cubic crystals. It's one of my favorite Gen 9 lines.
  • Those details are why I love the modern pokemon. Even a Pokemon like Squawkabilly has a lot of effort put into, with each form having different behaviors that all are like Punks/Rockabillys act like, even having gang wars. Other examples I really love are: Dragapults tail is disappearing because they never found the tail bones of the fossil it's based on. Bombirdier is a bombarding stork, as there is a famous kind of bombing plane called a Fiat BR.20 Cicogna (Cicogna means STORK in italian) used in the SPANISH Civil War. And don't even get me started on the 7 or so layers of the Orbeetle line
  • One Pokémon I'd love to shoutout at this opportunity is Maractus! I don't see too many people giving it a shot just because Cacnea and Cacturne came first, but I Maractus does something way different with the concept! Its name is a mix of maraca and cactus, and the PokéDex talks about how it sounds like maracas when it dances, immediately communicating that this funky fella is just here to have a good time! And it's just so stinkin cute too! Even with Ogerpon stealing my heart away wholesale, Maractus remains my favorite Grass-type Pokémon. It's just happy to be here and I'm happy it's here too! ^^

I can’t believe I overlooked that Nacli’s name is also the combination of sodium and chloride and it’s right in front of me! I feel blind. XD

I would also say that Pallosand is a portmanteau of pallor + sand, with pallor often used as a description of dead or ghostlike figures, as it indicates the “white as a ghost” hue often associated with with the dead (e.g., one’s skin having a deathly pallor to it)
  • Farigiraf: The name is still a palindrome, but it reverses the word just like the design is (the "possessing" head is no longer on the back but front). The giraffe body is also a "rig" for this psychic force to control, hence the hard g in the middle of the word unlike the starting soft g of giraffe. It's not what I thought we'd get from the evolution, but it's so well done that I like it even better for it.

Even better for Treevenant and Palosand are the shiny forms. Grey/silver tree with red/brown leaves, and black sand castle.... yes please.
  • @marleonka5578
I do love Treevenant, but as the Grass/Ghost type in Kalos, it kinda makes it overshadow a different cool Pokemon - Gorgeist, which is honestly a pretty unique Pokemon with its size changing capabilities

Ambipom and Aipom have been my favorite pokemon line since it was introduced in the anime 🥺 thank you for showing some appreciation to my boy 🥺🥺
  • I thought Murkrow was from Murky crow. I learnt something new 👍
  • @liannabunny7775
I do think that Murkrow might also have the name murky in its name
  • @darkwolf9637
Personally (and due to extreme bias) i absolutely love fennekin evolution progression, specifically braixen being a pompous, flashy show-off magician and growing up into a calm, serious sorceress.
  • @videakias3000
ambipom has that fun gimmick where it has normal type STAB fake out AND technician at the same time. too bad it is not viable in competitive. or at least not in singles. I know fake out is pretty good move in doubles.

ayyy emperor cubone uploads always go hard! your ideas and analysis are fantastic, and you deserve a lot more of a following than you have my man. one of the big reasons i have such a love for pokémon is just how creative the devs are and how deep their research is. especially as someone who loves nature and science, it just brings me so much joy. to see someone like you as interested and invested in the franchise as i am is awesome to me. keep up the good work brother🙌🏽

Yeah it’s easy to forget thing like that when it comes to the plethora of colorful creatures such as Pokémon, but thankfully I do notice the small details and I can appreciate a Pokémon more because of that. For example, Tinkaton still has its baby rattle fused into the core of the hammer, things like that make me appreciate a Pokémon more X3
