    Far out! That’s got to be the compilation with the hardest starts ever. All vehicles really struggled. Ironically, the Fiesta put in the best performance, as the only one that fired up at the first attempt, albeit after half a minute of solid cranking.

    The Silverado driver needs to cycle the glow plugs a couple of times, then turn that key and crank until the engine starts or the batteries start giving out. Especially if the engine is hitting on a few cylinders. While cranking, the high compression slowly increases the temp of the upper cylinder and facilitates the ignition of the fuel, since the glow plugs don't "glow" very long after cycling them, and they use a ton of energy from the batteries. Short cranking times is not the way to start these diesels, and depletes the batteries faster than if allowed to crank for a prolonged time - up to a minute. These starters are built for this and doesn't hurt them if the batteries are hot. but to spin the engine from a standstill up to 350-400 RPM's takes much more battery power than it does to maintain the cranking. Any heat built up around the upper cylinder area is quickly lost when cranking is stopped. Then the engine must be cranked on for a few seconds to get it hitting again. This driver lets go of the key at the worst possible time towards the end of the clip when the starter was merely turning the engine for the cylinders not hitting while the hitting cylinders were turning the starter. This does not hurt the starter because the pinion will free-wheel if the engine overtakes the starter, and it will maintain a minimum RPM's when the engine slows below about 350 RPM's. Back in the old days, locomotive diesels didn't have glow plugs and no electric starters. They had a small gasoline engine with a rope starter mounted to the big diesel engine and the small engine would engage using a clutch and spin the diesel engine. Sometimes it would take 30 minutes before the diesel engine would run under it's own power.

    That Iveco Daily - what a piece of crap! I would not put myself through that crap every day. There are better vehicles that actually start and run in frigid cold. Do all CNG-fueled engines have a hard time starting in cold weather, or is it this particular vehicle specifically? I must admit that the battery wins the prize for endurance! This hard start was worse than a low compression worn-out diesel with gelled fuel. If the tank is low on gas with a lower pressure, could that cause this situation? I can't understand how this fuel source has become popular if this is what is necessary to get them running. Seems that word of mouth would doom such vehicles and place the manufacturers in peril and the risk of bankruptcy when people avoid buying them like the plague. Just ask Chrysler about this.
