Mathieu van der Poel claimed an incredible victory in the first Monument of the year, winning Milano-San Remo for the first time in his career. A devastating attack on the famous Poggio climb proved to be the decisive moment of the race as the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider beat Filippo Ganna, who was second, Wout van Aert and Tadej Pogacar in a high-quality race.

When Van Der Poel is on, he's incredible. Amazing win!

MVDP did not make winning this race look easy. He made it look spectacular.

"Mathieu Van Der Poel is having one of those days!" That was the perfect description!!
  • @cup_and_cone
MVDP just rides away from three of the world's best TT riders swapping pulls. Absolutely insane.

what a beautiful job by Mathieu ....not only the surge just at the right moment over the top to create the small but critical gap but then continuing on rounding all those switchbacks so perfectly all the way down to the finish to keep the other strongest bike riders in the world who were still clearly chasing hard as they could the entire way, only off his tail by just a handful of secs. .... which at the finish turned out to be plenty !
  • Class act. As he said after WC cyclocross, he just needs some races in his legs to get in topform, this is the result, what a lad!

There's no other race in the world where 4 totally different riders can contend the win till the last meters. And the latest 30 kms are so intense and electrifying
  • Super happy for MVDP. This wasn't just a win - it was a "thank you" to his grandfather.

Incredibly smart team moves by Trentin at 0:49 and SKA at 1:32, and perfect positioning and timing by MvdP.

Soren Kragh Anderson was amazing, was there when he needed to for MVP, and as soon as he did see MVP was fine, he focussed on his own race, and finished in 5th, picking up some good points for his team.

What a race specially when it's the four best racer going full at it
  • Thanks for this mate.😎❤️👌 Fantastic win for MVDP. Holding off three great tiers to take the win is a brilliant.

Mathieu's watt bombs are out of this world. Looks like he's learning to use them wisely.

perfect attack from VDP, went at just the right moment, not even the 3 behind him could close the gap! amazing, not the sprinters race anymore, what an era of bike racing this is,like the old days when grand tour riders race to win the classics... bring on the rest of the races Tour of Flanders soon!!!
  • To me, the key moment is when he let Van Aert exhaust himself filling the gap with Ganna and Pogacar. Those 2 meters were too much for Van Aert. He closed them but also saved MVDP precious watts and gave him a moral boost seeing VA struggling.
  • Against 2 TT machines and another pretty handy in the TT. What a ride!!!

Got to love how when MVDP is on, he's on! He rides with such heart. Fair play to Ganna hanging with two stronger bike handlers then out kicking them for 2nd.
  • Impressive MVDP led over the Chipressa to test them, then let Tadej lead them out up the Pogio...and pounced! class act Chapeau
