What is Dear Evan Hansen (2021) about?

A screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Tony, Grammy and Emmy award winning Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect films) reprises his role as Evan Hansen, an anxious, isolated high-school student who's aching for understanding and belonging amid the chaos and cruelty of the social media age. He soon embarks on a journey of self-discovery when a letter he wrote for a writing exercise falls into the hands of a grieving couple whose son took his own life.

the vocals themselves are great but the actual audio quality, is something .
  • After 12 years of being in school. I wake up every morning exactly like this, it never got easy, just worse. This movie portrays social anxiety so well

can't get over the fact we got robbed of hearing Amy Adams sing Does Anybody Have a Map? 😢
  • For someone who almost committed suicide, I can say that I cried a few times during this movie. I might be one of the only ones, but I really liked that movie.

I saw this movie without realising there was a show, or that it was even a musical. I understand the hate, but I personally loved this movie. The performance and realistic portrayal of anxiety truly hit me hard

I’m someone who saw the stage musical first, and I was shocked that so many people hated on this movie because I decided to see it for myself and I FREAKING LOVED IT.
  • he sings like if he were crying and singing at the same time
  • I like how they don't do it as like this big number with a bunch of people singing or dancing it's literally just one big solo by him while everyone else is just ignoring him and going about their day. The symbolism hits.
  • As someone who is not super familiar with the original Broadway version of the show (I've listened to the songs but never watched a recording or seen it live) I really, really appreciated this movie. I get that it's not the same and that it's hard to suspend disbelief about him being the age of a high schooler- but for me it was worth having Ben Platt in it for his incredible vocals and seriously powerful acting. And I can understand frustrations when comparing it to the original- but as someone who isn't comparing it to anything, doesn't want to watch an illegal recording, and can't afford Broadway, this made the show accessible to me- and I found it really deeply moving. I might just request that people ease up a bit on the hate for it when for me, this movie was perfect the way it was and exactly what I needed :)
  • Can we take a moment for this camera work? It's SO POWERFUL. The way the angle changes on each tap and each watch shows how his mind scrambles, and it scrambles the viewers brains too.

As someone who has been evan for a while, when you feel like your invisible, this song hits close to home. This and you will be found are the songs about me and my joyrney as well. Thankyou ben for the 2 songs.

This was an alright movie, but I'll never get over how they cast Amy Adams, yet didn't even utilise her, or let her sing.
  • Everyone talks about the hair, but I love the close ups where you can see how absolutely caked in makeup his face is.

I'm so glad that Ben played Evan. I think he has the best voice for the songs, it sounds so effortless. I can look past his actual age due to how good his performance is

I cried a lot when watching this movie. I am doing a lot better mentally now, but I used to be just like Evan, and sometimes I still feel a lot of anxiety like him. I feel for everyone who has ever felt like him. Things do get better ❤

This is one of my favorite musicals and ben is the best evan for me, hands down
  • Why is everyone complaining about Ben Platt playing a teenager at the age of 27, when the dude who played Connor is only a year younger than Ben Platt
