Kyoto is the most popular place to go in Japan outside Tokyo. Because so many people want to go there, there are problems with over-tourism and the most popular sightseeing areas are very crowded. In this video I'll show you what it's really like, and how you can avoid the crowds and still enjoy beautiful Kyoto. Everyone wants to go to the top 10 most popular places, so they'll always be busy, but you only need to go a street or two away to find quieter streets. The video includes the popular Southern Higashiyama area around Kiyomizudera, Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, as well as Gion (including Hanamikoji Street), the Kamogawa River, Yasaka Shrine and Maruyama Park. Plus some off-the-beaten track spots like Tainai Meguri and Yasaka Koshindo.

Leaving the hotel at 5 AM definitely helps with the crowds lol

I really like that you show the reality of the crowds and haven't heavily edited your footage. Most content creators give you an unrealistic view of the scenery and the crowds. I'm not saying you shouldn't be excited/hyped but it does help to know what to expect 😂

I love this balanced perspective! I don't like being in mingling crowds, but also recognize that some awesome sights are worth braving the crowds. It's nice to have options to step out of the flow of people if needed - thank you! We're going in October.

My wife and I went to Kyoto 3 times last year mainly during the low seasons and managed to lose the crowds by avoiding the tourist hot spots and staying and exploring neighborhoods north of Sanjo/Gion. This was the best way to enjoy Kyoto.

I escaped the crowds in Kyoto by going to the railway museum. There was nobody there! 😜 guess that all those people must have been saving the trains for a rainy day.

I woke up at 3:30am to see the empty streets and I got exactly what I wanted! Ninenzaka was empty and I got a beautiful shot with no one around. I did run into a few Insta couples, but it wasn’t terrible. Then the next day I slept in. Worth it!

We will be in Kyoto early April, thank you for making these videos and giving a heads up.

We were there in April 2023, and aside from the trees having leaves by then and (thankfully) no more construction happening at Kiyomizu-dera, this video is very accurate to our experience! I hope you noticed the Pokemon manhole cover you were close to in Maruyama park!

Great video! It was rainy on our trip which helped to dull the crowds a bit 😂❤
