Cowboy Carter (also referred to as Act II: Cowboy Carter) is the eighth studio album by American singer and songwriter Beyoncé, released on March 29, 2024, via Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records. A concept album, Cowboy Carter is the second of a planned trilogy of albums, following Renaissance (2022). Beyoncé conceived Cowboy Carter as a journey through a reinvention of Americana, spotlighting the overlooked contributions of Black pioneers to American musical and cultural history.

Although many have labeled it a country album, Cowboy Carter blends diverse musical genres including pop, hip hop, trap, psychedelic funk, blues, soul, rock, rock and roll, opera, "Irish" jig, and folk music. Conceptually, the album is presented as a radio broadcast by a fictitious station called "KNTRY Radio Texas", with country singers Dolly Parton, Linda Martell, and Willie Nelson acting as disc jockeys. The album's songs feature lesser-known Black country artists such as Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy, Reyna Roberts, Shaboozey, and Willie Jones. The music is driven by a range of acoustic instruments played by musicians including Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Nile Rodgers, Jon Batiste, Gary Clark Jr., and Rhiannon Giddens.

Lmfao I love how unprepared the dad is for the feels. He doesn't know why he's crying 😭 same
  • Only beyonce can make a country album where every single song sounds completely different but all threaded together by a western theme. She makes country music fun and creative.
  • @bootcutbandit
I had zero expectations going into this album and it instantly became one of my favorites this decade

This is without a doubt, worthy of AOTY. We shall see if the recording academy has the gall to punish Beyoncé, yet again, for being an unapologetically Black, mainstream artist that refuses to be restricted to the genres and labels they try to box her in.
  • So Cowboy Carter is a response to the CMAs when Beyoncé performed Daddy Lessons with the Chicks. It was the highest rated 15 min. slot in CMA history but they pulled the performance due to racist backlash. After, the performance was put back up after 24 hours due to the backlash. Cowboy Carter was supposed to be Act I and Renaissance was supposed be Act II, but Beyoncé said, in an interview, that Renaissance was released first due to the pandemic and her feeling like the world needed to dance. You can play Cowboy Carter to Renaissance and it transitions nicely. Also, Cowboy Carter is in different parts. The last part, Ya Ya and forward, is where she doing genre bending and infusions with country (as Linda Martell explained). Also Linda Martell is a country artist pioneer from South Carolina that put out one country album and was the first solo Black woman to headline the Grand Ole Opry . Due to racism, she was exiled from country music and exited music entirely. She is now a retired teacher living in South Carolina (where I’m from. I was literally born in the same city as she was that’s how I know all of this lol).

fun fact, Stevie Wonder played the Harmonica on Beyonce's Jolene cover!

My dad passed away back in February ‘23 from cancer. I wish I could’ve listened to this album with him. He played country music his whole life. So many pieces of this album remind me of him. He loved Dolly, Willie Nelson. The outlaw country and western references are right up his alley. He saw every John Wayne movie like 10 times. My sister and I used to win every talent show singing Miley songs. He loved her voice. He also loved The Beach Boys and Nancy Sinatra. Levi’s were his favorite jeans 🤣 and Protector has his name written all over it. I just can’t get over how much of this album has pieces of him. But I can’t share it with him and that just kills me. I miss him so much. I wish we could have shared this album experience together. I cry basically every time I hear the album. I’m 27 and just think about all the things I’ll miss out on with him. Idk this album hit me hard. I’m a huge beyonce fan and he loved her voice 🩷 You are so lucky to be able to experience music with your dad. Cherish it forever. You have no idea how much your videos comfort me. I’ve been waiting for this one😭

Flamenco might be my favorite thing beyoncé has ever sang in her career. Such a sweet beautiful melody
  • I swear to freakin GOD I absolutely LOOOOVE watching people who actually (big emphasis on ACTUALLY) understand music review true ART. THIS ALBUM CANNOT BE DENIED when you trip away all your biases & preconceived notions!!!! I cannot stress this enough.
  • @torashi._
About her "trying" to be country: She wasn't actually trying she just unapologetically was and had a really thick texan accent when she was younger. She used to be called slow, uneducated, and "too country" because of how thick it was and to this day those narrative but the "too country" one cling onto her. When she first did country on lemonade (daddy lessons) and performed at the CMA'S, the crowd was really racist. Apparently, there were boos and racial slurs (source: Natalie Maines of The Chicks) thrown while she was performing with The Chicks. Later, the grammys refused to nominate DL in the country categories, too. She essentially was kept out of her culture because of her skin colour. When you actually look back on her career, you see the country elements and country pride all throughout. From DC to now, it never was left out. The only thing that changed was her accent, which got softer.
  • @verasmith1119
Your dad crying over protector is just the most touching, beautiful thing. That song is incredible.
  • @kelseyma8502
I think listening to YA YA for the first time genuinely changed me as a person lmfao
  • Beyoncé is a force to be reckoned with. She's not just surviving time, she's also readapting the game too.
  • “I think it’s a transition to a space-y album” The renaissance album and renee sitting right behind them: 👁️👄👁️? Lol it transition to the renaissance album!!
