I first listened to this album on a grotty little cassette player in my then girlfriends' house in 1974. We celebrate our 48th wedding anniversary in ten days time. thank you Mike for all the wonderful music you have created that our two wonderful daughters grew up listening to.

At the end of May 1973 I was a student in Cardiff, S Wales. As usual, with a cider bottle or two in hand, we blagged our way into packed 'parties' and spent happy evenings shaking our long hair around to whatever rock music was 'cool' at the time, drinking and chatting to the opposite sex. Then it all changed. Someone put this brand new recording on the turntable and EVERYONE stopped talking...everyone stopped moving and simply listened...some cried...some lay on the floor eyes closed. Everyone wanted to know what the h*** this was, who was Mike Oldfield and HOW old was he really??? An amazing and unforgettable experience. I am 70 now and still have goosebumps remembering. A few short years later I was lucky to be working at the rehearsals of the first orchestral performance of this piece and Mr Oldfield was sitting in the rear stalls (shy man) when, someone pointed him out to the orchestra - everyone in the orchestra stood up and applauded this extraordinarily talented young man. Thank you Mike Oldfield for creating this work and subsequent works over the years. A pleasure to know some of your world.

Wicklow Ireland August 1973. I was 9. Girl next to our caravan played this. "Can you tell me who this is please?" She was a bit older and "cooler". She replied "Mike Oldfield". Week later pulling my mother's arm, I sauntered into the local record shop with pocket money: "Do you have the Mike OATfield album" Sales clerk laughed his head off "No problem" he replied. First cassette I ever bought.

Feel in love with the spoken instrumental part of Tubular bell as a very young girl. Weird. But it spoke to me and at 59 it still does. I find it so amazing that a child can tune in to something so profound, deep and soul stirring. TUBULAR BELLS!!!!! Makes me ball every single time I have every heard it and that is probably in excess of 1000 times in over 50 years.

I love the end, when he announces the instruments that start playing. The moment he says "Plus.... Tubular Bells!" always sends chills down my spine. The feeling hasn't changed since I was a teen.

  • Awesome album even after all these decades. Oldfield was so young when he composed this amazing album, played every instrument. Without it Richard Branson may have never got off the first rung of the music business. Thanks Mike for the wonderful memories. This album still excites me after nearly 50 years
