First song has been stuck in my head for 22 years. It was different from what else was around at the time: Korn, Bizkit, Deftones, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Staind, and Disturbed. What really grabbed me was the tribal feel of the whole song, and how the lyrics spoke more about society at large, instead of personal daddy or girlfriend issues like other bands at the time did. Lyrically it has more in common with Rage Against the Machine or Fugazi, which was what we needed back in the 2000's. Its more anti- government oppression than anti-my parents and ex girlfriend. I later learned about the Brazilian government's oppression and corruption, and realized that Max is singing about far greater real life evils than American and British bands are. Its one thing to stand up to the U.S. President (and don't get me wrong, the U.S. does have its problems), but to stand against the far worse Brazilian government is far more courageous.

September 26, 2000. Today, 20 Years Of PRIMITIVE!
  • Oh gods. It brings me back to my teenage years. I'm 36 yo now, and I still think that Soulfly is one of the best metal bands of all times. They were precursors, they mixed metal with tribal music when it wasn't a thing. I'm literally pogoing on my way to walk the doggies lol

And i'm old now. Still loving this album. Max Cavalera is a Genius. What he touches is gold. God bless him and his family ! Thank him for this.

Best concert I ever went to. People weren't body surfing. They were flying over the croud and being flipped. My friend came out of the mosh pit with shoe prints up and down his chest and back. Lol it was INSANE..... the line up was Morbid Angel, Soulfly and Pantera in Dallas. Awesome memory!
  • This album got me 3 speeding tickets! Best fckn album and underated as hell. Musically, alone its a fck gift to the world. Then Max!!!! Oh shit!!! The lyrics changed me. This is still my anthem. The head space we need now.

this shit still sounds fresh today. nobody sounds like this
  • First time hearing this album was when I was around 17-18 years old at my first job working at a local restaurant/bar as a dishwasher. Everyone in the kitchen would take turns bringing in different music they wanted to hear. I brought in slipknot self titled, some korn, a scary sounds cd (because the narrator was funny to listen to). Others would bring in Eric Clapton, some hippy type music ect. Someone brought this in one time and it became a staple of the Cornerstables kitchen. We would put it on when we were getting slammed so it would give us the energy to power through everything. We used to have fun with the bring it song. The cooks would yell out mashed potatoes or some random food and someone else would yell "bring it!!!!" Half the time everyone there in the kitchen was high or something including me at the time so it was fun. Plus the waitresses's were good looking. (Got three girls from that job) Was a fun time. Makes me miss those days sometimes. Just don't miss the sucky pay lol
