The burning of Harrenhal occurred during Aegon's Conquest. Aegon the Conqueror used his dragon, Balerion the Black Dread, to melt the towers of Harrenhal, which killed King Harren the Black.

Harrenhal's walls were too high and too thick, and well-stocked enough to withstand a siege. During a parley outside the castle, Aegon offered to confirm Harren as Lord of the Iron Islands, provided he would yield. Harren refused, trusting in the strength of his castle, confident that the stone would not burn. Aegon warned him that the line of House Hoare would come to an end that night, at which Harren returned to his castle. To his men, he promised riches and the daughters of the riverlords to anyone who could slay Aegon's dragon, Balerion, in the upcoming battle.

When the sun had gone down, Aegon flew Balerion high above Harrenhal, before plunging down upon Harrenhal, burning the castle beneath him. All that was flammable, both suplies and ironmen, caught fire within the castle, while Harrenhal's stone towers cracked and melted. The rivermen outside observed that the towers glowed and melted like candles.

Whoever designed this Balerion truly loves him. Everything from measures to colors is accurate, top notch.

Aegon specifically chose to wait till the sun set so that everyone in the Riverlands could see the castle burning from thousands of leagues away. "It's not about the castle, it's about sending a message."
  • Imagine spending decades building a colossal & impregnable fortress then the Black Dread incinerates the whole thing in minutes

“When sun sets, your line shall end” Such an awesome line

The musical cues treating Aegon like a horror villain is so fucking perfect I’ve never cared about seeing his story on screen until now
  • @renan_niehaus
This is beyond incredible. The asoiaf community is very lucky to have someone as talented as you. I’m truly speechless.
  • This is probably as close as we’re going to get to seeing how Balerion looked

“I did it! I put the last stone in its place Harrenhal is finished! Oh Hey Aegon! What brings you here?”
  • I love this way more than Drogons fire simply exploding the stone walls of kings landing and the red keep. It’s so much more visually stunning to see a dragon MELT stone walls and cook everyone inside like a giant oven than see the fire just break through the rock like some weird version of dynamite.
  • At first I was confused on why Balerion's fire was black, but then I read online that his fire was black with a red swirl. Good attention to detail.
  • What I love the most about Aegon the conqueror is he was a merciful and smart one. He always gave the kings of each kingdom a chance to surrender and he'd reward them with letting them keep everything except being a king and replaced with the kings warden of each kingdom. Your enemies give up faster if you show mercy. Plus Aegon was smart enough to know he'd need each former royal family that's an expert about the land, history and liked by the small folk of each kingdom to help him run the whole place. Like Robert said "One king! Seven kingdoms!"

is it weird that I've watched this about 50 times already? The Transition from front to back when Balerion swooped down on Harrenhal was Top tier 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
  • @PistachioDean
I love that you made the stone melt because that’s how I envisioned it in the books, rather than the bricks exploding like in GoT
  • I love the small details. Balerion is so big in size he has to fly away some distance in order to take turns and unlike small dragons who can easily take sharp turns. Also if anyone wondering, Balerion’s fire was black

i love how you added a ladder to Balerions saddle, i always wondered how anyone could have gotten on his back

And that night Harren learned something new before he died, that stone indeed doesn't burn, it melts.
  • I hope that if they ever make the Aegon Conquest series into reality, they make Balerion's fire breath look like that or even better to be more unique than the other dragons fire breath.

Literally the best/most perfect version of Balerion that I’ve seen. Incredible work
