How To Pick A Motorcycle Lock - How do you get your seat open without your key? Can't get your gas cap open because you lost your key? Locked your key in your saddlebag or trunk? All you need is a good pick set and a little skill to pop that lock. Sorry to ruin your delusions of any security on a motorcycle but none of the locks are in any way difficult to open, even the ignition. A good set I've had good luck with is below.

I realize this is an older video – but thankfully you posted it! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this information. I was about to drill my cap out until I saw your video. I ordered a set of pics and a new locking gas cap from AMAZON - which cost me a total of about $40. After watching your video, it took me about 5 minutes to pick the lock and I was able to save the cap In case I find the key. Thank you soooooooo much!

Thanks for the info. Had a customer drop a gas tank off to paint . He brought it full of gas and obviously the locking cap on it. Took me 15 seconds to get the cap off with your help.
  • I did this exact method on my ignition on a 2019 zx10 and it started right up! Thanks for the video!
  • You are somewhat correct about the tension tool. It is used to simulate the torque of the key, but more important. It is used to keep tension on the pins inside the cylinder. When you are picking the lock. Tension is needed to help keep the position of the pins when you find the shear line. This allows the pin to hold its position while you move on to the other pins and get them to the shearing line. If you didn’t have tension on the cylinder you would pick the pins and the would be pushed back into the lock position every time you tried to get them to the shearing line. So you would be pushing them up past the shearing line and the springs would push them back down. So having tension on the cylinder catches the pins as soon as they try to move past the shearing line. And holds them there till all the pins have been caught.

Hell yeah! Watched your video, made a rake and tension bar from a set of feeler gauges and a dremel w/cutoff disc. Opened with one swipe of the rake, start to finish in 30 min including video! Thanks!

Thank you! Exactly what I needed! Some of these techniques were difficult with gloves and ski mask on in the dark but figured it out. Can you do a video about removing VIN’s now? For unrelated reasons.

Worked perfectly! After getting the cylinder to start turning, I had placed the key back in. Using a thin enough flat-tip screwdriver placed next to the key slot, I used a pair of pliers to work them back and forth. Finally, I saw the cap rise. I almost had to pry it open. What was holding it from turning and opening was all the corrosion between the cap and the tank. Thank you SO much for sharing your experience!

Just subscribed, you explain things with the right level of specificity and abstractions. It is an art. I used to teach. Good job.

Great tutorial, love the quality. Thanks a bunch. Was given a 650r with no keys and no title. Ignition bypass was easy enough but I completely forgot about gas cap.

Thanks for this vid, got my mates ignition out and on me table lol it's still in the steering lock position hopefully gonna have a go at that tomorro! If I can get the barrel out I can make a new key for him I think. If not he will just have to get new lock set! Don't suppose you know if I make a key from the ignition barrel will it open the tank and the seat? I know it doesn't work the other way round as they use less wafers. Thank you again great vid

Very interesting,I buy a lot of impounded bikes ,they never come with keys, this will help me,I shall buy some lock rakes and try it Thank you
  • @tartgreenapple
LOVE the high definition of this video, a real treat! P.S. What kind of camera do you use?
  • That was interesting. I may have to try this. Key won't turn in my gas tank cap. Lubricating hasn't helped so far. Thank you 😊
  • @bandit446484
Thanks. I think I’ll get a GPS lock for the Tenere instead of putting in in my top or side cases.
  • Thanks. I've sold a bike, handed over all the keys, kept the topbox to use on the next bike... and now realembered that the topbox key was coded to the bike key - DOH!!! Ah... well, let's have a go at this then! Attempting to crack the topbox will make me feel like Jason Bourne breaking into a top security super-spy manufacturing factory. Well there's no way I'm ever going to run half a mile flat out at this altitude waiting for my hands to start shaking, anyway. Maybe half a fathom...

Thnx.....helped me open my locked tank that lost key
