Voters in Everett have rejected a property tax increase that would have funded services in the city.

The latest results from Snohomish County show Everett's Proposition 1 failed with 60.24% of voters rejecting it and 39.76% of voters approving the measure.

The Levy Lid Lift for Public Safety and Essential Public Services was passed by the City Council in May for a vote in the August primary election.

It would have funded public safety, “Like police and fire, park maintenance, libraries, the animal shelter, street maintenance, support for neighborhood associations, social services for those in need, the arts, community events, and more,” officials said on the city of Everett website.

Proposition 1 would have also supported restoring services that were reduced or eliminated in the past, including Office of Neighborhoods staffing, some library services, and exploring the reopening of Forest Park Swim Center as a public-private partnership.

Maybe the mayor and city council should take a pay cut

Listen to this nonsense. Essential services like police, fire, and roads somehow always need money from the voters. But non-essentials like welfare & aid to the homeless, transgender bathrooms, and support for illegals somehow always get directly funded by existing taxes.

Good. Government leadership needs to increase financial efficiency and cut fraud, waste, and abuse of taxpayer funding.
  • @jia712
What are they spending the money they’re already getting on? House prices have gone up so they’re already getting more property tax from that
  • @WalkiTalki
Why don't they just get Inslee to illegally force it onto voters? He found a way to force an income tax and a carbon tax. The income tax not only being found to be illegal in a court of law but actually resulted in a lawsuit. One that Inslee relied on an appointed judge to allow. Most municipalities in our state operate on a general fund basis that makes it very easy to "disappear" tax funds without consequence.

HOW much "money" is the Mayor & her Staff being paid per year & WHAT kind of benefits do they get & HOW much does that cost ? WHAT sacrifices are they going to make to their Lifestyles for "mismanaging" their budget ???

Managed to convince people around to reject this tax proposal bs. This is not something we want at this time, it’s scary that many wouldn’t have known impact it could’ve made.

Fun fact: Wa State government received billions of federal stimulus dollars during the pandemic that went missing never to be found
  • @rheecp90
Why do the politicians who have governed in WA state for 44 years feel the need to increase taxes to pay for policies working people don’t support?
  • @mstoroe
How does a 44% increase (per the Everett Herald) equal $28 dollars a month? That math doesn't add up.

Ron Swanson would be proud. "Slash it. Slash it."
  • @RCenal
Good We the people need to put our foot down to this bs. Constant tax increases Little to show for it Making people do more with less We really need to get rid of property tax as is
  • @467076
Maybe we should stop spending so much money on homeless. Giving them needles, tin foil, drugs, etc. Embarrassing.
  • @nowhereman7398
They'll vote that your no vote is unconstitutional, and raise your property taxes anyway. Remember the $30 car tab fee?
  • @3DLasers
We didn't get to vote on anything like this in Crummyfornia... 🤬
  • @jenniroberds1571
Lmao..of course they're sad! They do need the services but not at the expense of those struggling already.
