Backpacking Yosemite / Merced River in April snow

Published 2022-04-25
We had hoped to do a 3-4 day trip, but even with it being a low snow year, some late season winter weather made us cut it short. Conditions this early in the year can vary quite a bit, so being well prepared & flexible is absolutely essential.

I'm so glad my brother and I got to share this epic experience.

Marcus, got the impression you didn't "train" for such a challenging hike, but I'm proud of your response to it -- and good luck in the future ones. Happy to see you guys finally were able to do this together. Upon reflection, the first is always magic!
  • Oh my goodness! This is like watching a National Park documentary of Yosemite! You outdid yourself with this video! The mountains and the waterfalls are so pretty!

Nice trip. At least on the way back you didn't have to fight the crowds on the JMT down from Nevada Falls. In the (crowded) summer that to me is the most frustrating part of a pack trip ending in the valley. I'm impressed? that you were planning to get all the way to Merced from Happy Isles in 1 day. I've done it (downhill) several times, but it's +5,500 feet to the lake your way. Once out of 'Lost Valley' and on the granite I agree- can be very slippery. Even last time I did it in the summer I fell on my A$$ in the high section between the bridges S. of the River and yeah - freaked me out, a long way down.
