had a stroke and my range is gone. just listening in for some tips. playing out on the street in my wheelchair is my only way to survive now and some days i can't even make a sound. starting back out with pedal tones trying to get my face flexible again. it's a long hual. i had no medical help, but the first thing i got moving was my valve fingers. hope i can get my chops back. thanks.
  • If Im being honest its the night before my audition for the top band at my high school and Ive been struggling with my two octave scales and wondering why I cant get high and that tongue arch thing literally just increased my range by like four nots and theyre easy to get out and I cannot thank you enough actually a lifesaver
  • @n0tale438
A week with tongue arching, and my range is a full sixth higher, and more effortless. This tounge stuff... I thought i was just born to not play high. For 20 years i thought that. Thank you ❤
  • @DEARSILAS
I just want you to know that I hit an F above the staff for the 1st time in my life with almost no effort just by making this adjustment. The next day I went even higher! You changed my life! 🎉
  • @PhuckHue2
Miles Davis played high a lot. first it was heroin then he switched to cocaine
  • @zmeyagosho
OMG, this technique is awesome! I watched this video just a few hours ago and already feel massive improvement! Still can't climb over my highest note, but I can stay there forever. After watching this, third octave C feels like second octave F!
  • Thank you for this video. I have been discouraged over endurance and range issues in my playing recently, and this gives me hope for my progress and helps me with the way to achieve it. Many thanks.

I have been playing trumpet for 2 years and can't play high notes :/ Im going to a very skilled band next year that plays very high...I got to learn..
  • This is by far the best resource I have seen for properly explaining what is wrong and how to fix it. Thank you very much
  • @QueenBirdGirl
I enjoy playing low parts on trumpet and you have helped me in the higher range were I would start to thin out in my sound but I'm switching over to tuba due to my skill and enjoyment in playing low parts thanks for the help :D
  • This is such a great video. Not only on content, but presentation. “Try to not let the higher note come out.” That is going to have the student learn it with a goal in mind. Wonderful. I play for a living and am going to put your concept into my practice routine to make some minor changes. I subscribed. Well done!

Kurt: Don Reinhardt taught me tongue arch and lip compression, ( rolling in and rolling out).  He also taught me diaphragm compression. He warned against over breathing, also, as you do.   You are absolutely right and correct.  Good work.

I stopped playing in Freshman year, and then now ten years later, I've picked it up again and for the life of me I couldn't remember how to make those high notes. This helps a lot.

Excellent advice. Your comments at 6:12 completely true. I think for some players who don't need to play high regularly they end up neglecting tongue arch and just let chops do the work but as you explain this limits them for going high and even if they can play high they have poor endurance. Then when they need to go high there's too much pushing on face, squeezing etc. going on. I've been there. I still sometimes fall into that trap. I think what's helped me is doing more of those lip trills but getting tongue arching to do most of the work not chops.
  • Hey Kurt, this video and visual demonstration of the tongue arch has helped me immensely in the really high notes coming out effortlessly. I'm an advanced player with strong chops but just a slight adjustment of my tongue under my lower teeth made my Martin Committee soar! Thanks bro.
  • My new year's resolution was to get to double high C. Since I began to focus on my range I've gotten a few notes higher. Right now Im at F over high C. I've been stuck there for months, but the high register I had when I began (Bflat to D) has gotten so much more powerfull and less brittle
  • @riangood2881
Yes, what he is saying is very true, I'm going to be a freshman this year and I'm already in first chair just because I've practiced so much, my band teacher is a wood wind player but my chorus teacher has a major in trumpet, he taught the brass players the process but many of them didn't practice it enough
  • Hi, I have a question - I've been working on the tongue arch and found it really useful - after struggling with high notes for years and being told just 'air' and 'muscle' and strength exercises not really helping me, this is really awesome! Just wondering - when tonguing crisply the tongue tip needs to be at the base of the upper teeth not at the base of the lower teeth (gum line), and I can't maintain a tongue arch with the tip of my tongue up there - how do you get around that? Should I be able to? Thanks!!
