Windows has always had certain penalties for those who either wait to activate their copy, or refuse to at all. But what actually happens if you just ignore the prompts and never activate your copy of Windows with a genuine key? The answer depends on your version of Windows, so we go over all the different penalties in the most recent versions of Windows, including Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista, and XP. It may surprise you!

I'm testing out an experimental youtube feature, so if it starts playing in some random language let me know 💀

10: Just activate please 8: please activate 7: Activate it... V: I SAID ACTIVATE IT XP: You didn’t activate, goodbye.
  • @genrole
Windows 10 is like the WinRAR of operating systems.
  • @orangehatretro
Windows 10: “buy a license eventually pls” Windows 7+8: “you seriously need to get a license” Windows Vista: “I will piss you off until you get a License” Windows XP: ”Your free trial of existence has expired”
  • @_stuffandstuff
Windows 10: Not a big deal, you’ll prob buy a license someday. Windows XP: either activate windows, or I spontaneously combust into flames.
  • @RealistikDash
If you don't activate Windows everyone will mock you for it
  • I seem to remember it was for security, so many people were running unpatched versions of an unlicensed Windows it was causing viruses to spread around easily.

Windows 17: You will be forced to call bill gates every 10 minutes and tell him why you didn't activate

The watermark keeps growing until there is no more screen left
  • For me the most annoying feature of XP activation was only being allowed to re-activate a few times before you had to do the phone activation thing. I had got used to re-installing Windows 98 without any activation apart from entering the rego. code. A few years later I had learned how to make system images so I was much happier!
  • Another reason is like; “Well, they ain’t paying me for this installation of windows, but they ain’t paying our competitors either so at least if I don’t get the money my competitors don’t get it either”
  • @Dr-Random
Windows 10: if you don’t activate it’ll be fine Windows XP: either activate or no computer
  • WinRAR: Your free trial has ended Me: minimizes it to bypass ir WinRAR: Understandable, have a great day

I think the reason for the lack of penalties from XP to 10, in part may be as he said, to get as many Windows users as possible, but I think thats a small part of the bigger reasoning, back when XP ruled, they essentially had no competition, now it has 2, Mac & Linux, Mac's upgrades are free or under $20, and Linux (Mainly the Debian, Mint & Ubuntu) are completely free, and due to small installation size, and no Bloatware, in a speed test outperform Windows, while using barely any Ram, leading to a better experience, and many programs have a Linux option, and for the ones who don't, the Linux community has developed a very similar free alternative, overall Windows changed tactics because they have strong competition, and they lost a huge market share, because they are no longer THE option, they've become just AN option, so they can't nickel and dime you anymore, or they'll fall further behind.

You can still change your background with un-activated windows 10. You just right click on a image and "set as background." Ive had windows 10 unregistered for 8 years lmao.

Windows XP without activating it is like removing the first word from its name. You're left with a dead emoticon. XP
