Elegant Olympic dives fly by in a matter of seconds. Because of that, it’s hard to know what to look for when you try to judge the sport from your couch. One thing that’s easy to see, though? The splash.

If you’ve watched any Olympics diving coverage, you may have noticed that the splashes athletes make are tiny. Divers spend years training to perform with minimal splash, in the same way that gymnasts train to stick their landings.

In this video, Team USA’s head diving coach Drew Johansen explains the three major components he uses to guide his athletes towards smaller splashes: the above water position, the underwater swim, and the underwater pike.

And while the sport of diving isn’t all about getting splashes, a small splash is the perfect punctuation to a job well done.

Olympic diving just got better without crowd. You could hear the board bending and water splashing. Too satisfying to watch.

I thought it was about who could do the most spinny spins and highest jums.

She didn’t get 0 points because of her splash, she got 0 points because she failed the dive, meaning she never completed the dive she was told to do.
  • There were 3 perfect dives (10s from all judges) today by the 14 year old Quan Hongchan from China at the 2020 Olympics. It was the least amount of splash I've ever seen in any dive!

The Chinese national diving competitions are amazing. You have multiple Olympic-tier divers doing perfect or close to perfect dives, and throughout all of this, the commentators are just constantly criticising (in Mandarin) on what the divers could have done better. It's hilarious. (You can find these comps on YouTube.)

This information will likely never be useful to me at all, but it's still fairly interesting.

I feel so bad for the diver who slipped, I'm sure it was something she couldnt control and was just an unlucky slippery board :(
  • @gimmibox
The 14 year old Quan Hongchan just made 2 perfect jumps at the 10m platform

14 years old gold medalist Quan Hong Chen is going to be around for a long time. She's gonna dominate since she won by so much at the Olympics already at such a young age. too impressive!

Quan Hongchan‘s dive, especially her splash is just perfect, can’t believe you didn’t include her in the episode

This video needs an update with the young Chinese athlete who just scored the highest score ever which included 2 perfect dives!
  • @plutoburn
I think it's ironic that they use a Chinese diver for making big splash when they've had the reputation for being the most consistent at doing rip entry.

I saw HC Quan of China diving in Tokyo Olympics, She is 14 years old and is almost perfect. Quite Impressed.

If I had never watched diving before, I'd think USA was the world best at diving after watching this video. China wins almost every gold for ALL diving events every world tournament and olympics. They only missed 1 this olympics. Theyre always unreachable in scoring. Sometimes 100 points above third place which is as if they had an extra dive which scored perfect
  • @Chop_Suey
Here after Quan Hongchan made the perfect dive!
  • If you want to see perfect performance just watch Chinese guys, they took all 🥇 in Olympic

Depending on the difficulty, getting next to no splash is always the key to bigger points total. Someone told me that years ago. I always thought the size of the splash didn't matter. And because there's no crowd, hearing that "rip" sounds great.
  • Tokyo Olympic 2020 where 2 Chinese athletes age between 14-15 there splash are so small ...
