The Mountains Where Dragons Live (Dragon Ridge Variant)

I never intended on variants getting their own limelight. If Chapter 1 of the Potrillo Basalt Fields series has proven anything, it is that I can create several variants for each theme I write to match the experience documented.

The original "The Mountains Where Dragons Live" very much exists, but until I produce a finished recording for all to hear it will only do so in my mind. The original theme was written to represent the Florida Mountains in the same way that the "Potrillo Nexus" represents the Potrillo Basalt Fields. Each experience documented in the Florida Mountains will produce its own variant.

I started writing this theme while still in Kuwait early-mid September. Once I came home, I was able to work on writing it more effectively from the piano. By mid October, the original theme was essentially complete, which made writing the music for Dragon Ridge a little easier based on the framework already established.

The music for Dragon Ridge almost seemed to go in its own direction though, and I realized that while the two versions sound similar, the "Dragon Ridge Variant" embodies its own spirit. One I wanted to show independently.

Dragon Ridge was physically challenging yet wondrous. At brief moments it felt dicey and then at times tranquil. It builds to the climax, the summit, where all its wonders reveal itself in a single moment balancing precariousness with exhilaration and awe.

I do not want this description to take away from the story I want to tell about the original, so I'll simply allow you to enjoy the music, and hope it sparks the imagination in the same way the Florida Mountains, and all the ranges I've visited have sparked mine.

All photos were taken by me on August 7th, 2019 from the Little Florida Mountains and Rockhound State Park.

Music was performed and recorded on a Yamaha Clavinova CVP 701 Digital Piano.

Video produced using Movie Maker (Version 2012) by Microsoft Corporation.

Thank you for listening! :)
