💙 WHAT IS A PROJECT BIRD? 💙
A “project bird” is a bird deemed unadoptable, unwanted and untrainable/unmanageable. It must have something that makes it so that the owner/rescue cannot work with it.

My GOAL with project birds is to work with birds that NEED my help - whether they’re privately owned birds or living in a rescue, sanctuary or foster home until they can be adopted out. I want to work with the “unadoptable” the “untrainable” the… “bird no one wants and that wants no one” and make them not only adoptable, but lovable. I want to show the world their value. No bird is too old. It’s never too late.

Past project birds have stemmed from numerous circumstances; Rasta the alexandrine we met while filming our TV Series One Day Miracles. His fear and aggression was so severe that it was beyond the training capacity of his 10 year old owner. I took Rasta on for a summer and returned him indoor flight and trick trained, crate trained and willingly stepping up, eating healthy food, talking and loving baths (all things he hated prior). Watch Rasta’s transformation here; youtube.com/user/BirdTricks/playlists?view=50&sort…

While working with a Freeflight student, my husband saw her blue fronted amazon parrot who HATED men and was severely obese. Dave brought Storm home to work with him but of course, I couldn’t help myself and I trained him in 45 days to eat a healthy diet and outdoor free flight trained him. We also taught him to like men. Most recently I worked with a handicapped Camelot macaw named Morgan who belonged to a friend of mine. Prior to finding a forever home with my friend, Morgan was passed from home to home because of her foot deformity that she was hatched with due to improper breeding. I trained Morgan in 4 months time, you can view her transformation here; youtube.com/user/BirdTricks/playlists?view=50&sort…

I have NEVER charged anyone for my time in training a project bird. I have also never charged for food, boarding, transportation, toys, etc… this is why I have only been able to do project birds very rarely.

Because the word is spreading about these project birds and the work I do with them, I’m getting more requests to work with more birds. As much as I want to be able to take on project birds more often, I’m not in a financial position to be constantly doing so. That is, not without the help of my patrons over at www.patreon.com/birdtricks. Because of my patrons, I am able to take on project birds more often which makes my heart so happy.

To take on Lefty OR Touché it will cost me $1,580 for three months of providing toys, pellets, fresh food, transporting to/from (I’m driving to do so, so gas money only - but yeah, I have a truck so gas hog!) I'm not including food/hotel expenses or including the my own time for training. Obviously project birds demand a lot of time, especially initially, as I first work with them and that is time that takes away from my own birds, consultations and opportunity costs.

Thank you to my clients, Patrons and my subscribers here on YouTube for constantly pushing me and helping me - it was a client who made me create a Patreon account and it was a subscriber who pushed me to monetize my channel, and it’s everyone who is pushing me to take on more project birds and find a way to make it financially possible to help more birds. I appreciate you all so very much whether you watch my videos without ever commenting, or you take part by sharing, commenting and giving a thumbs up. I love those of you who go the extra mile and give me feedback in my community tab. I love being able to get my inspiration from all of you and help birds in the process of doing so. There’s so many important messages I want to spread in appreciation of my project birds.

Here is what some of my project birds have taught me:

Rasta: Face your fears.
Morgan: Even if others give up on you, never give up on yourself.
Storm: It’s never too late.
ChiChi: Don’t forget to play.

My initial reaction was Lefty, but really theres no wrong choice here. Both birds deserved better fates than life dealt them. Looking forward to seeing your progress with him.
  • I want to see you work with both Maybe after you're done with the Quaker parrot you could take on the ringneck?
  • Either bird would be lucky to have you, but I must say I am glad Lefty got chosen. His story made my heart sad 💔 Can’t wait to watch his progress
  • @kelawoops
I think leftie is a good choice. I feel like he really needs you. I don't know how bird rescues work, but his agression would probably keep him from ever getting adopted. I hope you can make a video about wing clipping, tho. It is also a very important topic.
  • @SimKim
Indian Ringneck - They are so widely available in the UK for such cheap prices that I'm sure it would be really helpful to a lot of people.
  • Lefty, because I think it will be a really beneficial process for people who are maybe in a similar situation as his previous family and just don't know what to do. I also really like that you encourage the outlook that birds should be raised with the mentality of 'I want my bird to be able to flourish no matter what happens or where he/she ends up'. Your videos are amazing and you do a wonderful job, keep up the great work!
  • @BirdTricks
Wow, guys! SO MANY of you want me to take on both and my patrons agreed so they gave me the idea of a new SPONSOR BIRD TIER on my patreon. You can support me there so that I am hopefully able to take on BOTH BIRDS by May 19 with enough support! Here is the link; www.patreon.com/birdtricks with all the details about what is in store for you for helping me achieve this amazing goal! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! A new video update will go up this weekend about how this works.

I think the patrons chose right, while neither are in ideal mental (and physical) conditions atm. lefty's story and behaviour needs a far more experienced hand (in my opinion <3 ). his story seems like it would also help those who do adopt rescues to understand them a bit more, especially those with behavioural issues or trust issues. helping resolve lefty's aggressive like behaviours would also relate to some ring neck owners as when ring necks get broody they can get a bit over the top. i hope both find the best forever home! i cant wait to to see your journey with lefty. xx
  • @brookea8496
I like the ring neck, I feel like watching him gain his flight and balance back would be so cool.
  • @jjgnva
I totally agree! Lefty is dealing with a heartache..That needs special care. The other bird needs help too, once it wings grow back you can take him on!!!
  • @isisemkeb
Why not both ?!?!?! They are two poor souls that beed YOU !!!
  • I think over time it would be best to work with the Indian ring neck in addition to the quicker. You’ve shown many examples of working with a bird that is aggressive but I think it would be interesting to show you working with a bird that was damaged so drastically physically by humans. I think the story of this Indian ring neck or a bird with a similar physical condition caused by ignorant humans would be a really good story for the internet to have. It might bring some awareness to the harm we can do by being misinformed. Thanks and love you as always. You guys are the best.
  • I'm happy the Patrons chose Lefty. I have a Quaker and he is sweet and loving and I think Lefty needs love. I'm really looking forward to seeing you work with him. Would be great if you could help the Ringneck too.
  • Thank you for working with the rescue organization to find Lefty a wonderful forever home. There aren't many (or any) legitimate training videos that address serious parrot aggression issues so it's great that you can provide this to your viewers. (Hopefully you can work with the Ringneck later down the line.)
  • @amcgeckos
I think Lefty needs your HELP more, just my opinion. Congratulations Jamie. Thank you for sharing. Can't wait to see the future Lefty videos.
  • @TheBioExplorer
Yes Leftie! I wanted him because I too believe that every bird can be helped. My first bird was a Quaker and I think they are so underrated. They talk about as well as African Grays and use language and tools. Super smart birds with a huge personality. Mine was named Smarty Pants because of his mischievousness. They truly are little green dragons. I'm so excited!!!
  • @millycarter170
I think you should take on the Quaker Parrot, your such and awsome person!! I wish good health to your birds and family!!💙💙💛💛💚💚💜💜🧡🧡❤❤
  • @Jasper_Tree
I really want an Indian ringneck myself, so it would be cool to see one on your channel
  • @Eirammmm
Ringneck! Omg yes please 🙏 it’s be a great birthday present to see you work with a Bird like mine. His wings are clipped.
  • I have a male Quaker that just turned 1yo in May 2019. He is adorable but very territorial with his cage. He is a good talker. Beware of the mood swings! One second he is kissing me and 2 seconds later biting me. He's just a little guy with the biggest personality! So glad you are going to help Lefty so he can get a new home. Quakers are terrific companion birds!
