Terrific vid. I built this same bike (less ape hangers) after consulting with Johnny about two months ago. This bike seems perfect for a BBSHD build, since one of the ways it saves upfront price is that the bike doesn't come with a front derailleur, which would have been removed in the ebike build process anyway. As Johnny mentioned, the bottom bracket is 100mm precisely, and I used a 100mm BBSHD. Perfect fit. Also, great chainline after install without the need for a high-tooth Lekkie Bling Ring. Ultimately I used a 40T front ring from Luna to increase the stump pulling power, and to eliminate that heinously ugly stock Bafang 46T ring. I ultimately changed the freewheel to raise the top gear so I could assist a little more at higher speeds, too. Loving it.

Geeking out on cool shit is never “too far”. The more you geek out on something cool and techie, the better!!! Your passion is inspiring.
  • Those apes really grow on me. I keep coming back to this video to look at it.
  • Love the video. I have the same bike and got the same components without the ape hangers. Did a conference call with Johnny before I purchased the components. I highly recommend paying for his advice. Love the way it turned out. Thanks Johnny.
  • I just did a build with this bike for $1600 (gotta find those craigslist deals) and I put my old Shimano hydraulic brakes, a 135mm suspension fork in it by 3d printing a crown rac, and base dang I love this bike. Got the Luna bbshd 100mm bottom bracket (with one 5mm spacer) with 1500W continuous output with 2×[52v 19.4Ah] batteries and a 12-32T cassette with the Luna eclipse 42T front. I measured an applied torque of 168Nm and a peak of 186Nm +/- 4Nm. Truly an awesome bike! My advice though it's to get spacers because you will need them! Followed your advice, and oh man thank you!

Dang! I just built a Mongoose Malus like that. The only original Malus part was the frame and fork, everything else was replaced. I used 27.5X2.5 wheels with street tires. I need to go with a bigger chainring to eliminate ghost pedaling. Heading to your website now to see what you have. Just bought the Lekkie throttle from you, nice.
  • The frame is actually made by Giant. Thanks for this video, I found this prepping to do the same thing to mine (less the hangers).

Nice choice on the bike! Great conversion quality! Spot on why the hill climb failed, no fault of the BBSHD, it's powerhouse.

I checked Cosco online and not seeing this bike. But if you can get that for that price right now, that's a great deal! Shift sensor is a game changer, I put one on cause of one of your builds. I feel comfortable loaning my bike out to someone and they wont destroy the chain/gears. Cool build!

I built the same bike. 1000w, 52v 20ah and installed a 36t Lekkie chain wheel on the front. It is a beast.

Lekkie arrived this morning, so after spending shit loads of cash and time tryna do it my way, looks like you win this round Johnny
  • I hear you about that 450 bucks. I got a Rockhopper for 454 bucks. Sweet and I’m just about done with it. I’ll show it off when it’s done.

Enjoying videos Johnny looking forward to meeting you! Jesse

Great Video!!! Thanks for the content. Does anybody know the rear hub spacing on this bike? 170mm, 190mm???? Also the spoke count on the rear hub? Thanks

Love the fat tires on the costco bike. While the ape hangers handle bars are cool looking, they're a bit too high to be practical mixed use riding. You just converted my Trek Marln 7 and I love it !!! I want to add a little wider tires, but noticed front rim is not centered on front forks due to brake caliper assembly being up close to the fork and wheel aligned to that side. Any suggestions on how to move the brake caliper assembly further in to allow front rim to be more centered between the forks?
  • I use shimano xt cassettes on the back of my mid drive fatbike. With 26 tooth front . I have ripped Chinese cassettes apart. Shimano makes a 34 tooth rear freewheel that is reasonably priced mega range.majoity of econo bikes use freewheel. I used one with excellent results before I switched to a framed fat rear wheel with cassette.
