wow. i was sceptical of the title of this video. You will REALY understand VOR's after watching this. Thank you!!!

VOR saved my bacon on my private cross country in 1975. I was not listening or it just didn’t sink in when the flight weather station briefer told me my destination airport was two miles visibility with fog. That was the second leg on the trip. I blissfully took off and when I got near my destination I couldn’t find the airport cause of the fog. I took radials off of two VORs and when they crossed figured out where I was and where the airport was. Finally found it.

During my flight training days, my instructor had me verify that I tuned to the proper VOR by listening to the audio Morse Code identifier and then matching the sound to the printed Morse Code elements on the chart. I told her that I confirmed it by ear already. She didn't believe me. I then informed her that I held an Amateur Extra Class Ham Radio license from the 80s, whereby I was required to demonstrate my ability to receive Morse Code at 20 WPM by ear and that I had my Ham license in my pocket if she needed proof. She just said "Oh...ok, then." Hehehe.
  • This was a fantastic lesson. I really liked how you put the audience “in the cockpit .” I never really understood VORs that well until now.

Wow, I feel much more educated about VOR's now. I really struggled to understand them completely in one of the online schools, this is done VERY well! Thank you!

This has helped so much, thank you! Finally someone who doesn't lie about the title

Thank you for dragging me out of the depths of Kings school and making this understandable
  • Great lesson! Well articulated, illustrated and demonstrated. An other good trick is: FROM top TO bottom. To find out on what radial you are on, rotate the OBS and when the needle centres if you have a FROM indication, you read your radial position on top of the indicator. Conversely, if you get a TO flag, you read your radial position from the bottom of the I indicator. Thanks for the video, well done!

There should be WAY more stuff like this where you actually show the instrument working in real time, rather than someone just drawing what the instrument looks like at certain static points. Way way way more helpful.

Thank you! My instructor told me it was his first time seeing a student learning VOR that fast! The best VOR video!!!

Getting back to flying after about 25 years. Most of my ground school was 50 years ago. These videos are a nice little refresher.
