Hey everyone! I hope you enjoy this kind of unique story. It's a little bit different from the typical cave stories, and I think is a nice change of pace. In any case, make sure to check out the White Vault using the links in the description!

Came for the cave horrors, stayed for the pea stories
  • @Catherinzsl
The way this was told, I was expecting to hear someone had surprised Rob at depth with a handful of peas, leading to panic and death. While his death is still tragic, I'm relieved to know it was not pea-related (as far as we know).

The pea story is so interesting because I imagine it doesn’t have much to do with the dive but it feels like, while researching, it was almost like OP kept reading anecdotes of ppl being like “yeah that cave was wild but what was REALLY weird was the pea thing” and he just had to include it haha. 😂
  • @claytheenemy
Love that all his friends were mystified by how he discovered the peas. My theory is that he would come back from the bathroom (a pea break if you will) and all his friends are staring at him and trying not to laugh. So he'd assume they played the ol pea trick on him again.

My theory about Rob’s pea-detection is that the phobia was real, but he didn’t have a sixth sense, he was just good at reading people’s faces to find out if they’d tampered with his food. In that pub story, he surely suspected that they’d do something to his drink while he was away.
  • The sad thing about people who are so gifted at dangerous things is that they almost always end up facing tragedy. I guess it’s an odds thing. They are on that deadly edge so frequently that they eventually, despite their skill, fall on the losing side. My heart goes out to all of Rob’s friends and loved ones.

I really appreciated how you spent a good deal of time focusing on Rob Palmer's life, who he was as a person, how he related to other people, his personality, etc., When it turned out that Rob lost his life doing what he loved, it made me feel that loss, too. I was sad losing someone I never even met but already admired. Great job as always!

Sean: “This opening is called the four sharks blue hole, and at the bottom of this blue hole is…” Brain: “Four sharks. I bet it’s four sharks.” Sean: “…one of the largest underwater caverns in the entire region.” Brain: “That makes way more sense.”

My dad used to tell me about all his diving stories, the good and the bad. Worst one being a shipwreck in the North Sea. The ship slid slightly whilst they were both inside and the silt shifted making visibility instantly become Zero. He and his buddy sat on the floor for almost an hour linking arms, clicking their torches on and off every 5 minutes to see what was happening. There was nothing else to do but wait for the ship to either shift again, the silt to settle, or to run out of air. One of the worst stories I ever heard him tell and I hate even typing this out. I've done 20+ dives on my PADI over the years in the Caribbean, Pacific Islands and West Australia, but only to 15-20m Max. I can't do anything more than that. It genuinely scares the shit out of me losing sight of the surface. That thought will never leave me whenever I talk of or am reminded of diving. Him sat on the bottom of a ship in a drysuit in freezing North Sea waters, pitch dark, breathing like a monk... Waiting. I don't suppose he ever told my mum lol, crazy bastard.

these people kept messing with his phobia, Rob sounded pretty sharp and probably figured out what was going on, is it really a surprise he would check his drink when he came back?
  • @brucegwynn47
Robs ability to sniff out peas reminds me of the way some dogs can sense a seizure coming on to their owners , dogs can smell bombs and seizures then certainly rob can sense a pea in his beer
  • @raditts
I'm not sure I'd be as good friends with people who constantly messed with my food and drinks the way Rob apparently was.
  • @nicwelch
I would never willingly surround myself with anyone who use a phobia of mine against me for some sort of amusement.
  • @GRvyBB
I REALLY like that you don't use AI images. So many channels use them these days and they are so distracting from the story you're trying to listen to.
  • @artilante
man even though i know you cover stories of events going terribly wrong and ending in death, the build up of robs life and the hilarious detour about the pea thing rlly got me rooting for this guy and hoping he somehow made it out anyway. RIP, bro seemed wicked as hell
  • @Eidolon1andOnly
The pea in the beer being detected is pretty easy to explain. Either, or both, the pea left an oily sheen (due to being cooked in butter or oil) on the surface of the beer, or the pea acted like a nucleation site for the carbonation in the beer and a small unusual stream of bubbles was noticeably coming up from the center of the glass. Think Mentos and Diet Coke but not nearly as reactive. Alternatively, and even more likely is that he noticed all of his friends watching him with anticipation, and could read their body language so he naturally suspected they did something to his beer since his friends have a history of hiding peas in his stuff.
  • @kelseypowell6256
No matter how scary or how terrifying the story is I find your voice so soothing I love watching an episode before bed 😊
  • @KeitieKalopsia
Rob probably “detected” the peas every time because everyone else likely had small tells or were unconsciously behaving suspiciously
