Hey Beekeepers this is a video I threw together in the process of dipping. Therefor the details are scattered throughout the video. If you would like me to do a shorter more detailed video let me know in the comments! Thorne Box Dipping Tank thornemfg.com/product/wax-dipping-tank/ Camie 1080 Mold Release amzn.to/4awbkMx

Budget wooden ware? Pretty knotty. The 300 degrees will help dehydrate the wood. No moisture, no mold or fungus to rot the wood. Pretty cool.

Hello Kamon! Box preservation is very interesting, and I'm with you on painting them. Will this company be present at the upcoming January conference? :) 45 boxes an hour seems like "someone" could be doing that as a nice sideline service. Great point about ground contact accelerating the deterioration of any woodenware. I'm going to be following this system closely :) When bee clubs purchase gear collectively, someone still has to store it. Interesting about the boxes slipping on hot days, that's a great point. Keep on posting, I'll be watching!

here recently, iv seen several posts on the local fb bee clubs of people asking bout wax dipping. iv got a layens frame swarm trap that is wax dipped, bit of over waxed, but it works. i do not do the lang sq boxes, i do horizontals langs and moving into layens now, using the conversion hives i built. id much rather wax dip then, mostly to bring out the natural grain of the wood, and been using rough sawn "green" (air dried bout 3-4 months) from my sawmill, and some of the knotty pine is absolutely beautiful and it sucks painting over it. But unless i build a tank, im not seeing anything that'll do horizontal hives. guess i need to price stainless and brush up on my tig welding

Thanks from cold Russia! We're doing it on a bonfire, ho ho.

You're right on the termites. Wonderful ran a bunch of wax dipped pallets. I was up there last month and asked about the durability of those pallets. I was told that treated pallets lasted way longer than the dipped ones because of termites.
  • What is the projected life span on wax dipped equipment over painted equipment?
  • @Drewjober
Wow that’s slick are the boxes glued and does it break down the wood glue ? If you left it in extra time i don’t think it wood hurt lol 😂
  • @tammyhoffman6486
Do you still glue the joints and if so, does the wax still penetrate the joints or just the bare wood?
  • I'm thinking no, but going to ask anyhow, could you dip older boxes that you painted?
  • I didn't see this question. How many pounds of wax do you put in to fill it the first time?
  • @emh114
how long to heat up the tank to be ready to dip.
  • So whats the real purpose for that port hole? And also how much propane does it eat during say an 8 hr run?
  • the biggest problem other than cost I am seeing is shipping the wax to my location. I don't see it on Thorne's site and can't find anything close to me here in Pennsylvania. Any help on this?
  • @josephrawls
You can't hate painting any more than I do. 😆 I love wax dipped equipment. That is one nice machine. 👍

Version 2 is looking very good! It's great that Thorne took suggestions to improve it. I just got some of the unassembled Propola boxes from Bob and they are almost worth the extra for how easy they go together. I would say it takes half the time of a normal box. Hope you have a great year!
