Hong Kong to Hong Kong in the 737 sim. Fabian wins the landing competition.

Shared cockpit landing at the Hong Kong Kai Tak Int'l Airport (VHHX) after a grueling 10-minute flight from the Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok Int'l Airport (VHHH) in the Boeing 737 simulator. We fly the infamous checkerboard approach over Kowloon and preserve all souls onboard.

Fabian is a CFII and experienced 737 sim pilot. Thanks to him for making this video possible.

  • Max Vertical take off : I experienced one in Hawaii. I was taking a plane from Honolulu to Maui. I was the only passenger on the plane. I asked the pilot- who was a young guy if he could give me a max vertical take off and he looked in the cabin to see there was no one else and said "Wow! Its its just you here?? Okay, I'll do it!! " And proceeded to give me a MV that blew my mind. Much love for Hawaii!

    A max-climb take-off is what a normal take-off feels like to a first-time passenger :)
  • @JosephCarnes
Good video, but, is anyone else missing the old days of 13-year-olds making hot air balloons that can keep up with F-18s?
  • @controul
That vertical takeoff tho... Only a matter of time till we see a hot air balloon with Air Force One callsign in the simulator.
  • The 747-400 was B-165, operating China Airlines flight 605 in November 1993. It ended up in the harbour after a landing in poor weather. The tail was removed as it interfered with the ILS for 31, so they blew the tail off as they determined it was alright to leave there otherwise in that state for the time being. It was then used for fire-fighter training for the rest of it's time at Kai Tak. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Airlines_Flight_605#Aftermath
  • I nailed that sucker numerous times for real in DC-10 and 747, as did all my colleagues who flew there. Can't say it wasn't without tension, but there was satisfaction in doing it right, which we had to do every time because not doing it right was not an option.

Pilot Flying: "Look, poodles!" GPWS: "PULL UP! TERRAIN!!!"
  • ive been in a 737 sim myself and i can say that this is an incredibly hard approach, you seem to be quite the pro at this 😂
  • @dynad00d15
Cholesterol levels are at a record level high as the tarmac has been spread with butter.. great landing job, guys
  • @maxcheung6556
Fun fact: The "Big Boi" in 4:53 is called the International Commerce Centre (ICC). It's the tallest building in Hong Kong and it's located in Kowloon.
  • Not a pilot but I have landed a few times at Kai Tak (? in the 80s) and the only thing the simulator doesn't show (of course) are views of people in their apartments watching TV on the final approach. Scary stuff I recall.
  • @RayonChan
Been to Kai Tek last weekend..Shenzhen to Hongkong , like taking a bus. (737 SIM tho The simulator pilot told me that I could use the mountain as a reference.

Greetings from Hong Kong! Kai Tak was always cool. Now the decommissioned airport is being developed into new residential areas, a children's hospital and a cruise ship terminal which is right on the end of the old runway - must be a lot of fun to land into that, but at least the sick children could watch something exciting unfold outside their windows
  • How cool, you went to EFS! I am 13 and have done the same approach with Fabian. My dad’s parents are from Hong Kong and he has visited twice as a child from Chicago. He flew there once in 1978 and once in 1988. I told him how lucky he was to fly the Northwest 747 on that approach! Must’ve been exhilarating…
  • While I will say I miss the silly content to some degree, as it's always reliable for a laugh out loud moment, it is sincerely amazing watching these sim videos. It's obvious you're taking it seriously, and truly love the content your making! I look forward to all the future content, both silly and serious!
  • @K2LURULZ
Just got back from Air Force basic training and boy have I missed this channel
  • @onenightblitz
Kinda weird to see an active Kai Tak and the ICC tower at the same time. During the days before the airport in Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong imposed zoning restrictions in the Kowloon area to prevent highrise buildings being erected.
  • God Emperor Florida Pilot Man coming to rescue my day again! Thank you, Appleslice69, you’re my hero.
  • Nice one, I’ve actually flown that approach back in 1998. It’s a thrill!
