Nightwish has had 3 lead singers, The Poet and the Pendulum is about the first one, and the singer who doesn't wanna be seen in the documentary was the second one. But yeah I would definitely recommend the "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" documentary for you to watch!
  • @randyboyles
The 48 hour doc is about their second singer, Annette Olzon, leaving the band and about how Floor joined them mid-tour. Poet is about the backlash of firing their first singer Tarja.
  • Hi Lanae! Let me give you the most important data regarding the Poet and the Pendulum. As you already know Tuomas Holopainen - the keyboardist - is responsible for most of Nightwish's music and lyrics. Many of his songs deal with matters that are personal to him and this is - together with 'Dead Boy's Poem' THE most personal one. The song was triggered by the band's break-up with their first front woman Tarja Turunen (1997-2005). I will not go into details about this, perhaps others will as the reactions will show, but let's say it was pretty ugly. What 'The Poet....' deals about is the aftermath this event had on fans, media, the band and foremost on Tuomas (The Poet) himself. While firing Tarja was a decision made and supported by all band members it was Tuomas personally who was criticized heavily by part of their fan base as well as the media. Apart from the fact that he feared about the band's future he also was heavily troubled by the negative reactions. All of this brought him into a state of depression. Later in an interview he stated 'I decided to kill myself in the song so that I did not have to do it in real life'. I strongly suggest to react to the 'Live in Wembley 2016' version. Looking forward to it.

You'll get your answers right away. In the mean time, watch Floor singing Shallow (Lady Gaga) during the Dutch TV program Beste Zangers (Floor is, Dutch). You will be amazed!
  • I learned to know you as a huge empath. Poet will lead you to another level of empathy. Whenever you feel ready to do it make sure you have tissues nearby. Even I - after watching it hundreds of times - never get out of this song with dry eyes. And I am 64 now, so I had something thru life. One Info you need to know: Tuomas wrote this song during a huge depression following troubles within the fan base after firing Tarja. He decided beeing - helped by his mother and father - instead of suiciding himself for real to do it within a song. There you go, I will wait for your reaction because I know it will be a highlight. Greetings from Germany
  • "The Poet And The Pendulum" is about the backlash received by the band after they fired their first singer, Tarja Turunen, in 2005. At the end of the last concert of the tour promoting the album "Once" (2004), the other members of the band handed Tarja a letter explaining the reasons for the dismissal, which they then made public. Tarja then responded with another open letter in the following days. Following this exchange, the band's fans were divided into 2 very vocal camps. A good part of the fans then turned against the band, which led to a state of tension that was very hard for them to bear. Creatively, the echoes were seen in their next album from 2007, where 3 songs address this event: "Bye, Bye Beautiful" (addressed to Tarja), "Master Passion Greed" (addressed to Tarja's impresario / husband) and "The Poet And The Pendulum" (addressed to the backlash received by the band). There is also a documentary in which the tension preceding the breakup is felt: "Nightwish - A Day Before Tomorrow", here is a version (the one in 6 parts) with English subtitles: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfkukrFeyhR054MB5iC8ug9… You will also find in internet the text of the 2 open letters. After almost 2 decades since these events, there are still ex-Nightwish fans angry at the band, which proves once again that it's not a good idea to wash your laundry in public. The documentary "Please Learn The Setlist In 48 Hours" covers the events of the tour promoting the album "Imaginaerum" from 2012 and 2013, when Floor Jansen joined the band as an emergency replacement, when Anette Olzon (the 2nd singer) could no longer continue to perform. Edit: it might be a good idea to listen to 1-2 songs performed by Tarja before listening to "The Poet...", to have a reference.

Anyone can appreciate the greatness of The Poet & The Pendulum, at any time, especially Floor’s performance at Wembley. However, if you understand the meaning behind it, the emotion from Tuomas, his agony and pain, as you experience it for the first time. It will be a very powerful, emotional experience for you, and I think that is what the NW Army is hoping for. Get to know Tuomas better, the speculation that he had unrequited romantic feelings for Tarja, the original lead singer, no one really knows the truth but him. Read the open letter they gave her, when they let her go, and her response. Also watch some of their songs with Tarja first. Live from her oast concer, Phantom of the Opera and Wish I had an Angel, for sure. Dead Boys Poem, with Floor is a another good song , along with Song of Myself, to get into the mind and heart of Tuomas. Also watch Bye Bye Beautiful, which is the band’s response in song to Tarja after they parted ways, as well as listen to Master Passion Greed (no video or live performance) which is the band addressing Tarja’s husband who the band blamed for changes in Tarja. Possibly the heaviest song ever. I do highly recommend Learn the Setlist in 48 hours, however, that gives you the insight of the second lead singer’s dismissal (Anette) and Floor’s arrival. A whole different situation the learn about the band. We are enjoying your Nightwish journey- Nightwish Army, North Texas divisionl
  • @folkme3042
Hi Lanae! Loving your Nightwish reactions. If you want to hear one of their heavier songs try the live version of "Your's Is An Empty Hope" where you'll hear Floor at her growling best. Killer riff from Emppu too.
  • @ValtteL
Based on your reactions, i think you will really enjoy Please learn this stylist in 48 hours. It is about their world tour where things went south with their second lead singer Anette. They fired her mid tour and Floor Jansen joined the band.
  • I do recommend watching Floor Interviews .....she's as captivating in those as she is on stage .
  • @majbrat
Would love to watch you react to the documentaries. The 48-hours one really sets up this last 10 years with Floor. The making of Albums one's for are always fun to see as well. Floor also has some videos on her YouTube channel that are fun. :)
  • I would definitely recommend the 48 Hours documentary. But you will be reading English subtitles because they mostly speak Finnish in the documentary. One of the highlights you’ll see is Queen Floor’s first performance with Nightwish. She nailed it right off the bat of course. As for concerts, One of my favorites is the Tampere, Finland concert from 2015. Floor puts on a stunning performance at that show.
  • they have a phenomenal cover of Phantom Of The Opera featuring original singer Tarja and Marco that is worth checking out.
  • @SRMWorkshop
Poet is based on the aftermath from the 2005 breakup with the first lead singer Tarja. They then let the second lead singer Anette go in late 2012, and that's where the 'Learn the set list in 48 hours' comes in. The multipart documentary from about 2015 follows the making of the 'Endless Forms Most Beautiful' album and the change in drummers happened during that time. I would do the 'Learn the setlist in 48 hours' first. Also only the beginning of that one is Subtitled, they switch to english part way through.
  • Gabriel's list, Tarja or Floor, Anette is bad live, your not ready for the Poet and the Pendulum, etc etc. It is all garbage. As for which documentary that is like asking which concert to do next!!!! The well is deep and even the most ardent fans of Nightwish and all the singers cannot agree. This is your channel and Nightwish journey. The real fans have heard and seen it all before so do not worry about upsetting any of them. Take whatever route you like because just from the first few songs you have covered it is clear that yours is a must follow journey for any fan of this band. My money says you will enjoy all the concerts, documentaries, singers, and solo stuff to come. Whatever you choose or advice you take I'm onboard. The fact that your an Emppu fangirl is reason alone to follow you!
  • @wanmac31
    48h 🤘😊👍💙🇫🇮 Edit. One sit, pliiiiiiis 😁👍
  • Floor's original groups After Forever, ReVamp or Northward. Her duets with Epica or Evergrey. Ayreon/Star One project where she appears as a guest singer, sometimes alongside her younger sister, Irene.
  • @ANDZIGCREAM
There is nothing like "you are not ready" for The poet. Sure it can be fine to have some backstory but the song will blow you away either way. Think the comments you have recieved about why that song was written is enough. Don´t need to watch documentaries or listen to the whole catalog before you are ready. I will suggest that you use captions though.
