Our Flowclear pool pump on our Bestway (Intex) Steel Pro above ground pool was making a loud grinding noise. I will show you how to disassemble and fix it, as well as how to clean dirty filters to use in the future and save money. This also applies to the Coleman Saluspa Lay-Z-Spa Pump Filter Motor if it is also making weird noises or not working, which is made in a very similar way to the Intex and Bestway pool filters. If your Saluspa isn't working, then take it apart and use the instructions in this video, too!

Transcript of video:
We have a really quality above ground pool -- just kidding, it's pretty cheap. Bought it for 500 bucks (circa pandemic prices). Gets a lot of use, our family loves it has a really, kind of, cheap pump with filters and these things are really kind of cheaply made it has a very cheap mechanism inside of it very plastic.

But before you get the urge to just throw it out, you can take it apart and fix it. This is sounding pretty good right now, it's running really well. It's got two intakes in it (sorry for the stuff floating on the top), but it's got two intakes and here is the outtake or whatever that's called.

See, if you can hear that it's supposed to just sound like this. It's not gonna ever be perfectly silent, but this is pretty good.
Before that, it was making a grinding noise and yours might be too, or it might not even be turning around at all, and I'll show you how to take it apart and clean it out and also to conserve money on buying filters. So, before you do anything you want to turn this off, so you're going to come over to here and you can just turn it off by hitting this test button and it'll shut it off. Then you're going to walk back over to your pool and you're going to pull these guys out (see if i can do it with one hand). Okay, put those off to the side and then you're gonna take you should get three of these with your pool and you're gonna put these in. If you don't have these,

try to find some other way to stop it up but that's what it'll look like so you're gonna do that with all three of these inlets and outlet, and then that will make it so you can disconnect this guy and so I have those plugs in all these outlets and inlets so the next thing you're going to do is you're going to take this off I'm just going to pull this off just twist it around

just like that water will come out that's okay you're gonna take this one off just rotate it around until it pops off and then the chambers will just empty and then you're gonna take this and just like when you're changing your filter you're gonna take this off um i usually loosen this a little bit then you're gonna take this off but I'm not gonna show this because i can't do it with one hand but i'll show it one i'm going to take this into my shop and show you what it looks like all right so i got this kind of drained out

All I did was take it apart per your instructions and put it back together. This is the first time the pump has worked! Thank you so much. I was ready to trash it.

Yo! Coming from a vacuum technician, the best way to wash pleated filters is to soak them in a dilution of “Dawn heavy duty degreaser” (the purple degreaser chemical AT LOWES, NOT the dish soap). Then rinse with water, then water and white vinegar dilution (removes degreaser residue), then water again (removes vinegar residue). Other chemicals clog the pores of the filter media, eat at the fibers, and/or fray the fibers.

    Exactly the advice I needed. Very well done...thank you !! 👏 🙂

Thank you for making this video! My pump didn't work after putting it away for the winter and spring. I took the pump apart, cleaned the rotor and boom its back in business.
  • Yes, I reset my GFCI. I disconnected the hoses last night and dried everything. I could not get the bottom screws to loosen without stripping them so I left them alone. Instead, I plugged it in dry and it was spinning (motor on). Instead of using 2 drain to filter hoses, I used only 1 since my pool is small, and of course used the hose that connects back to the pool after filtering. That seems to have done the trick. I believe having 3 hoses was overload. Not sure but for now it's working. Thanks again.

THANK YOU SIR! just fixed our pump, it made more noise than usual and i figured i would take it apart to see what was going on, also i have two solar mats and they didn't heat the pool anymore due to lack of pressure. I just needed a quick tutorial on how to disassemble the pump, did that and found that there was a tiny part that came loose at the bottom of the axle, put it back together and presto it works like new.

If you lift the pump above the pool and undo the grey nob on the top it will allow air in so the pipes drain into the pool, then take the pipes off as he demonstrated and put them into the pool, you won’t loose any water

Hiya Jason, I use the same pump on my fish pond with a skimmer & wish to give you my tips if I may. Firstly the skimmer has socks inside the basket so I do not use filters inside the pump. Secondly, my spindle which went through the impeller was made of plastic & snapped in 2. I got an empty biro pen insert & cut a length the same as the broken one, put a toothpick inside the biro to add some rigidity & put it back together. It works like a dream.

Thanks so much Jason, could you please let me know the size of the washers to buy? We don't have them locally so will need to order online. Thanks in advance!

I have a similar pool but this one uses the large long pump that goes on the side and screw seals to the pool and hangs. I wonder if someone out there that is good with 3D printing could make a better impeller design that would work better. I've seen people modify the pump I have and run the upgraded sand filter in line after the pump. I can see stuff float past the Inlet so it just seems like it needs better suction which a better impeller design may solve it. Just a thought for those with 3D printers maybe worth a shot for cheaper DIY fix than $300 bucks on the sand pump upgrade most people seem to do.
  • My Coleman Power Steel aboveground pool came with the flow clear pump, it's transparent so I can not only see the condition of the filter (clean, dirt), but also the amount of water flowing through the pump. So, yes, the pump makes same noises, but when you can actually 'see!' what's going on, you're, well, I am at ease. I can truly say, if I couldn't and just heard all that clattering, I would be wondering what is going on. As in my neighbour's hvac system is loud then gets louder then makes all these sounds and I wonder what is going on, is it ok, is it going to explode. Beeb doing it for years, so, guess what I'm sayin is, I like my transparent pump, but I cannot find another one. The hoses are cracking and I put flex tape around cracks. I can't find replacement hoses.
  • @apopopopo8777
Im gonna try this tonight on mine, the noise is unbearable. Man I really hope it works! Thanks
  • Just disasembling that wobly pump made it work back again... I had to sand the selenoid a little bit cause yeah mine is in plastic, even the shaft of the pump is in plastic 🙃. TY. (the shaft is in ceramic.) make sure the pump pumps water with a good flow cause if your filter is dirty the shaft will warp and snap.
  • @lilbroweyes
If you have a water hose with the sprayer that offers different settings you can use that to clean your pool filter. I cleaned mine today using the jet sitting and I even put the sprayer in the middle to get the top and bottom really well anyway hope this helps and they also make a device you can attach to your water hose specifically to clean, the filters
  • My green light on plug was flashing and my gfi kept flipping. Now grern light does not light up but timer lights eork. Do u need to buy new pump
  • @recondovargas3788
GOOD INFO. LOL, WHEN YOU TOOK IT APART LOOKED JUST LIKE MY BIG FISH PUMPS ALL THE PARTS INSIDE.
  • @davena4Jesus
My pool is crystal clear bit I knew the filter hasn't been cleaned in a couple of nights. I believe it's going to make it turned off till tomorrow. That pump I always have it running
  • @GREASERVILLA
This pump came with my pool and it was absolutely horrible. I ended up upgrading to a 2500 gph pump which was twice and a half as much ghp as this one since this is one is only 1000gph. Now this pump I had left over so I ended up using it as a fountain to keep my pool cool during the summer.
