Suzi Siegel found a ridiculously good thing and has made it all her own. She and Móle Siegel, a Mexican Hairless Xoloitzcuintle, have lived in the sunny studio apartment in Jackson Heights for 7 years. To keep the studio bright and airy, Suzi divided the spaces with sleek sliding screens and subtle transitions of pink wall paint to designate the different “ecosystems” in the home. Our favorite area is her work from home office where the author writes facing a wall of windows covered with thriving plant life.
And although she does live in a studio, it’s surprisingly large by NYC standards and made to feel even bigger by her applied minimalism and its multifunctional features. When we asked her to describe her style she said, If Barbra Streisand, J-Lo, and the Dalai Lama all decorate an apartment together and none of them had a lot of money, you’d get my studio. Those are the three elements of my personality that are embodied in my home’s style. I am a Jewish woman of a certain age with a certain schmaltzy aesthetic. I also am a woman who grew up in the Bronx in the ‘70s and ‘80s in a Spanish-speaking household (raised by my Puerto Rican stepfather), dances salsa, and loves clothes. Last, I am an avowed Buddhist who mediates every day and goes on regular silent retreats. All of that is (somehow) reflected in my home. What an answer!
The NYC journalist and author of Tiny New York is a proud New Yorker raised in the Bronx, and she has a passion for documenting what’s unique and quintessential New York. Her book, Tiny New York, celebrates “the tiniest things in the biggest city.” After living in multiple boroughs and traveling the world, she settled down in Jackson Heights, Queens and has since made it her “muse.” Suzi says, “I'm Queens obsessed”– her neighborhood is a living example of NYC hustle, beautiful diversity, grit, and ingenuity.

I love her. I felt the same when designing my home. I was afraid but said the same thing she said. I love getting dressed , I can actually figure this out. And I don’t have to listen to anyone when it comes to my home. This is my space. I love her home.
