Being almost 60 and after years of using my local MTB trails as my practice race training trails. I look back and wish I had someone tell me “Hey! Let me help you understand its not all about going fast.
Cadence - Learning to ride at a higher cadence really changed my ride performance. Instead of using torque with muscle and really burning energy and muscle to push a big gear I was spinning using aerobic capacity. I'm able to do mutiple efforts at aerobic and feel stronger throughout the the entire ride.
Turning - Increase your turning performance by using the side tread on your tires. Leaning the bike over and using the side tread really has tire bite. The inner foot up and the outer foot up the inner arm stretched out the bike will really feel stable.
Backpack - I never leave the house without my backpack. If I’m riding to the trail I’ll have my phone, wallet, rain jacket, and all my video gear. If it gets colder I have additional layers. If it gets warmer out I can peel off layers and thrown them in my bag.
Fixing a flat tire - I suggest going through all the steps at home once. That way if you get a flat on the trail it’s just a matter going through the steps. You know you have all the correct tools and materials.
Glasses - I know it is easy to say I don’t like wearing glasses. I was the same way until I had a hanging branch over the trails jab me right below my eye and latterly knock me off my bike…
Music - Riding with music in your ears is a bad idea. I started doing this years ago and it is a hard habit to stop. There is so many negative reasons for doing this. Let the wind and tire noise be your music.

On cornering , especially on loose, I find it useful to apply pressure to the inside handlebar. Like pull down a bit Get ready to post the foot though.😆
