Thanks for leaving the comment. It was a terrible ordeal and good to know that something good came from it.

I was on this fire and I personally know the survivor you are talking about. He leads crews here in southern Arizona and teaches NWCG classes

Thank you for posting this video. My name is Chris and I was there too. I was on a civic conservation crew at the time, I was only 17 and we were over on Diamond hill working a file line for a planned controlled burn. I remember this day very clearly and while sharpening my chainsaw blades and taking a brief break from work, I watched the lightning bolt that struck near dude ranch and watched the first small plumes of smoke turn into "The Dude Fire."

thats the hope. That others might learn from our mistakes and take precautions we did not.

That is very cool. Did the State ever ante up and at least reimburse the families or anything?
  • @antlion71
Well it's good to know your still around. I didn't see you at the 20 year reunion, and no one really knew of your whereabouts. I have been in Reno, NV for the past decade and moved to Wichita KS about a year ago. I am with an air ambulance group called EagleMed. We do fixed wing and rotor wing ambulatory transport. No fires here except for structural.

It was quite the experience. What crew did your friend fight fire with?
  • @antlion71
The three guys on our crew that were given the medals of valor were the ones that carried a severely burned victim from the same crew to safety. I would bet this is the same guy. I will have to look through my articles to find his name. The rest of us cleared out the area for the helicopter to medivac him out. I would love to find out more about him and if this is the same guy.

Moe...is that you? Holy crap it's been a long long time. Lil Opie here. What have you been up to?

Would have been a great video had it not been for the obnoxious music selection.
