Flatirons Tuning Tech Tips - Information you need if you are considering a JDM Engine Swap

It is pretty common for us to get questions about directly swapping a Japanese Market engine (JDM) into a US market car (USDM). And it would be great if it was as simple as it seems like it should be to just install the engine and move on down the road.

Unfortunately it isn't necessarily.

If you are considering doing this swap, there are some things that you need to know so that you can make a good decision about going down this path. So we have put together this video to answer the most common questions that we get asked about doing this swap.

Hopefully this helps you, and thanks for watching!

Thanks for covering this. You saved me from a hellish trip down a nightmare of a rabbit hole!

If you do your homework you can get a non avcs 2.0 from an importer and swap out the intake and exhaust manifolds, couple cam pulleys, and sensors and you'll have an excellent running engine. I'm 3 years on a JDM 2.0 swap and I'm extremely happy with it. Even came with huge ported heads and ran great with minimal tuning.

Great advice in this video. Doing the Ej20x JDM swap in my 08 Impreza. Ended up using a USDM ecu to pass inspection. Had to use USDM cam. Engine CAME WITH turbo down pipe that was cut low (necessary to fit).

I’ve done plenty of the EJ20X swaps, you can swap your USDM turbo setup and be just fine. You can run the jdm cams and cam gears with a 2.0 WRX timing kit. All of the sensors are the same as, at least, my legacy gts I’ve done it in. Retard the exhaust cam gears 2 teeth to keep them from free floating. Get a tune for the higher compression and such. I’ve been running it on the track for over 40 hours of continuous beating and it’s loved it so far 👍🏽

Experience makes all the difference😎 thank you again for imparting so much subi knowledge! There are too many jaws flapping out here that haven't even done a swap but who are confusing the community by reciting wrong info.
  • Hey man! I’m swapping a 2.0 2010 Nissan Sentra usdm with jdm, anything to look out for? Dropped 9 hours ago. Glad I came across this.

Currently undertaking swapping a jdm ej25 into an 05 impreza 2.5rs biggest differences I've noticed is the intake and wiring are slightly different. Do they both need to be swapped or can it be used as is? Any recommendations?

I have an 07 Forester. I put an 07 JDM legacy avcs in had to add pcv to Japan harness and repin the temp sensor to allow for the us temp guage wire. Took 2 days and everything runs great. I didn't change cams, crank pulleys anything

FlatironsTuning : Thank you so much for your info on the AVCS difference between JDM and USDM. This whole JDM thing is new to me as of about 1 month ago. That’s because I am looking to replace the 2.5i motor in my 2009 Subaru Outback at the suggestion of various comments I have received from a Subaru online forum I joined to sort out what I do not know and the best way to solve my problem. I had a feeling it was not going to be as easy as simply pulling the old engine out and bolting the JDM in. I also had a feeling I was not going to do the work myself. I have no problem turning a wrench. But at a certain point I step back and let the pros have at it. And your video convinced me that having someone else do the work is most definitely the way for this guy to go. When there is the possibility something out of the ordinary may go wrong, that’s the time I choose to have someone else do the work with a warranty to back up that work. Once again, thanks for the very informative video. You have helped put my mind at ease :-)

Old video I know but just a little FYI that you might find interesting..during Subaru factory training we were told that tube was to help prevent oil aeration in the pan... I no longer remember exactly how it was supposed to work or if it was really gone into that deep but I definitely remember that is what I was told by Subaru is the purpose of that port/tube.

Pleasure to watch this video this guy discusses the issue in-depth, from his vast experience. May I suggest getting a remote microphone to improve the sound and take videos to the level of professionalism.

Very informative! Wonder if you can help me with this. 05 Avalon, 3.5L V6....JDM. After install... starts, runs smoothly for 2 sec. Then dies. I can do this repeatedly... and can even throttle up smoothly.... only for 2 sec. WHY??? Any insight is appreciated!

You can find jdm ej 255 sti motor that are plug and play 2006-2008maybe even2004 Forester sti's were made to usdm specifications but never imported the U.S.
  • I have a 1995 impreza outback with a full 02 usdm wrx swap including dash. Been having a jdm ej205 in for almost 3 years with no issues. It is a single avcs motor that is ran by a usdm ecu. At the time I didn't have an accessport so it got protuned using open source. I did not change a single thing on the motor except the intake manifold since the motor came out of a 2004 forester xt which was drive by wire and everything on the factory manifold was different. My avcs does not work since the usdm ecu are not equipped to run that but other than that it works perfectly fine. I hope this info helps anyone out there trying to swap their car or in the market for a new motor. and one last thing, a tune is a must if you go jdm motor. Usmd motors have air tumblers and the jdms don't, you just simply leave them unplugged and your tuner will turn those codes off.

My wrx has a jdm swap and I’m planning on reverting that back to an ej255
  • @aawcomputers
i have ej207 v9 with dual avcs and i'm wanting to put it in my2009 wrx what would need to be swapped over?
  • Got a 97 accord with a Jdm f23a runs and drives but emissions has me in a bind I got a new cat for a 98 accord but wanted to know if it will pass smog in California
  • I've a question maybe you'd be able to help me. I have a 2002 2.4 V4 Toyota Camry. I love my car but recently I've noticed that white smoke has been coming out the tailpipe (Only for a couple of seconds and only in the mornings) . I had it checked out and my mechanic is saying my head gasket is going out. I've noticed that I've been losing coolant every so slightly. My engine has 134k miles on it. My mechanic is charging me 1500.00 to replace the gasket. I have many JDM shops that sell used engines around my area for 1200.00. Labor is around 1K to put it in. A total of 2200.00. I also found a rebuilt engine on offer up for 900.00 + 1K to put it in but I don't know who rebuilt the engine. I don't do any tuning and I'm not a mechanic myself. I just want reliability and I want to get to point a to point b. I live in So Cal. What do you suggest? Thank you for your video it was very informative and your advice is very much appreciated.
