Searching for Saxons in Cammeringham!

Published 2021-07-25
In the late summer of 2020, a team of archaeologists from Network Archaeology carried out an excavation near Cammeringham in Lincolnshire. They excavated a previously unknown early Anglo-Saxon cemetery of national significance that has the potential to change our understandings of post-Roman Lincolnshire.

The site was first discovered by a team of metal detectorists who found several beautiful and significant fifth to sixth century grave goods, which had been unearthed by ploughing. The excavation of the site uncovered skeletons adorned with jewellery, weapons and dress accessories, and cremations held within decorated urns.

The project was followed live on social media by thousands of people, who became armchair archaeologists and shared in the story as it unfolded on site. Watch this film to see the highlights of the project and to learn more about the people who were buried at Cammeringham 1600 years ago.
