Why This Ryan Gosling Film Wasn't Allowed A Sequel

Ryan Gosling is an actor that most everyone seems to have a specific image of. With a run of movies like The Notebook and Crazy Stupid Love, Ryan Gosling was seen as nothing more than a handsome heart throb relegated to romantic comedy and dramas. But one movie proved Ryan Gosling was so much more than that, he was legitimately funny and could carry multiple genres on his back. The Nice Guys was a movie so underrated, no studio even looked at sequel opportunities. Though one could argue, Ryan Gosling doesn't show up as Ken in Barbie, without The Nice Guys.

Hands down one of the most underrated comedies of the 2010’s that doubles pretty damn well as a top notch buddy cop movie. Gosling and Crowe rock together

The amount of times people tell me they haven't seen this film is a shame. It's so much funnier than most comedy films made today and it all feels natural with a slick mystery at the heart of it.

Ryan to me is at his best in a comedy. He’s a great dramatic actor but there’s something inherently hilarious about him. I think he was the class clown how got to become a movie star.
  • that's a pretty clickbaity title. like did we actually get an explanation as to why it didnt get a sequel. i got to the end of the video and realised that was never a point that got explored, it just talked about the making of the movie

I watched this movie on a plane just to kill time, much to the chagrin of the poor lady next to me who I kept waking up with my poorly-stifled laughter. Can't believe I discovered one of my favorite movies years after it was released, and by total accident. I really hope we get a much deserved sequel.

The Nice Guys also had one of my all time favorite performances of a child character in Holly. She was so endearing, sincere and funny in the movie without feeling like an adult written into a child's body or a kid played by an adult. Angourie Rice also had fantastic chemistry with the two leads

I loved nice guys. I would kill to see a sequel/series based on it

On one hand it makes me sad how many people haven't watched this film, on the other its always a treat to get to introduce them to this gem. No one's ever been bored or disappointed by it. Really hope they get around to making a follow-up.

There could still be a sequel...let's keep the hope alive because this masterpiece deserves it

ryan gosling is one of those actors that really becomes the character. i’ve watched almost all of his films and i’ve never once felt like i was watching ryan gosling the actor. he makes it so easy to lose yourself in whatever movie he’s in because his acting is just that seamless. are there any other films like the nice guys? i watched kiss kiss bang bang and i enjoyed it as well.

The slapstick performance in the scene where he sits on the toilet and draws his gun made me laugh so hard. The chemnistry between Crowe and Gosling works as well.

The Nice Guys is a rare example of a perfect movie, we all have our favorite films we watch from time to time but then we get up and go about our day. The nice guys is different however. I can watch this film repeatedly on loop and be just as entertained if not even more so the more i watch it. Its up there with the likes of Shawshank redemption or The Departed or Goodfellas and Seven Psychopaths. Its a warcrime we never got a sequel to this movie. If i woke up tomorrow a billionaire i'd fund a sequel myself.

I watched this film on TV without knowing its prior existance and was baffled I never ever heard of it or even saw any ads, this is one of the best comedies ever made.

You’re telling me that one guy did: Lethal weapon The last boyscout The last action hero Kiss kiss bang bang And The nice guys?!!! These are all crazy entertaining and re-watchable movies. Just wow!
  • @redgreen2453
The fact that this film didn’t spawn a full on franchise is, without a shred of hyperbole, the greatest tragedy of the entire 2010’s
  • If there is any sequel that should be made, It's The Nice Guys. Better for studios to sacrifice ten superhero movies for one sequel of this film. The chemistry of Crowe and Gosling was perfect.
  • @philm0graphy
All of the trailers said "from the Director of Iron Man 3," personally, I think that it would have been more enticing to see "from the writer of Lethal Weapon"

Everyone complains that Hollywood only makes reboots and sequels, but when gems like this come out nobody shows any love! One of the best buddy cop movies ever made.

I always think of Michael Cane in The Muppets Christmas Carol when it comes to actors who took a film outside of their norm, though I guess it isn't so much a shift in his style, since he played it as straight faced as if he were acting with humans. Bryan Cranston is another notable one, though obviously he made the opposite transition of hilarious and slapstick comedy to Walter White. This film was amazing though. I knew with the scene with Ryan Gosling slicing his arm open, that I was in for a really special comedy. As they say, comedy is very often misery for the main characters.
