Not 100% sure if this is possible but try looking into prerendering for minetest, it might be possible, if not, have an option to pretender for players joining the game to have a more seamless experience. Similar to Minecraft performance mods. Also try looking forward into generation around players to not have to render blocks inside holes, for example if u were mining in a cave their would be culling so you only see the visible blocks, if you haven't implemented that already.
