Reishi Mushrooms with Asia Suler + Reishi Maple Truffles Recipe

Published 2022-11-01
I am thrilled to bring you this conversation about reishi mushrooms with Asia Suler. In this interview, Asia shares reishi through a beautiful lens. If you aren't already welcoming reishi into your life, her sharing will probably inspire you to do so.

As you’ll see, I just finished reading her book, Mirrors in the Earth, which I absolutely loved and highly recommend.

Also, don’t miss out on getting a free printable recipe card for Asia’s super-yummy and medicinal Reishi Maple Truffles. (You’ll find the link in the “Links” section, further down in this description.)

By the end of this episode, you’ll know:

► What makes reishi so unique in the way it supports our immune system

► How nature connection can be so powerfully healing

► Why you shouldn’t buy whole dried reishi

Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:

“Even when a tree fell, that wasn't the end of life in that part of the forest. New flowers came forth, new saplings could spring up. I thought, ‘Well, if nature can heal anything, then so can I.’” (05:29)

For those of you who don't already know Asia, she is a writer, teacher, herbalist and earth intuitive who lives in the folds of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Asia is the founder of One Willow Apothecaries, an Appalachian-grown company that offers handcrafted herbal medicines and educational experiences in herbalism, animism, ancestral healing and earth-centered personal growth. Asia has guided over 20,000 students in 70+ countries through her immersive online programs. With her writings and teachings, Asia helps people embrace their own unique medicine through a joyful engagement with the natural world. Asia’s first book Mirrors in the Earth: Reflections on Self-Healing from the Living World is available now.

I've been seeing Asia's powerful herbal and healing offerings out in the world for years now. It was such a delight to finally meet her and I’m so happy to share our conversation with you today.

  • What an incredibly enriching and magical episode. All it took was hearing Asia share her Reishi Tree story for me to immediately order her book. Rosalee, you continue to be a conduit of magical connections for me. Thank you.

So thankful to take in this episode today - I've taken Reishi daily for a few years now, and have literally held my hands to the heavens because it has become clear how much more resilient it has helped me become. Thanks to Reishi, along with herbs to support my mind, I bounce back within an hour from situations that in the past would have sent me into months of agonizing depression. Hallelujah! And as a side note, I, too, have a huge dry Reishi that has been sitting in my cupboard since I started learning about herbs years ago haha! Let's all put our dry Reishi mushrooms on display and get some conversations going about it! Looking forward to cracking open Asia's book ASAP.

This brings to mind another channel I tune into occasionally. The herbalist said she had noticed in very recent years the abundance of Mullien growing in her woods. And then covid. And then she understood why so much mullien had grown. I got the same electric shivers when "since the 80's Hemlocks have been receding and Reishi have proliferated." The need was ahead, God was preparing the earth for what we would need. I will listen to this conversation again, and again. Thanks to you both Rosalee 🙏🏽💓
  • Wow! It's morning! Good morning to you. I love all of the podcasts and videos that I have seen thus far, but this one touched me more. I have been on a search to find an herb to help me with my autoimmune disease. I do not like the regiment that I am currently taking. My Dr. laughs and says ok. I believe in my heart of hearts that I will find something natural to help me. I thank you so very much for this podcast. I have learned a lot. I can now take a deep breath and know that my quest is a bit closer and not a far off dream. I'm in NC too. Take care.
  • What a great converstion, Rosalee. Love you both! I know Asia personally, and she's the real deal. A gem. I loved her book and all of her courses are amazing! 💚
  • WHAT A GEM! This was one of the most beautiful podcasts I heard here at Rosalee's. Such genuine, heart connected stories of Reishe from a medicine woman who is beautifully connected to the plants. Asia Suler is inspiring and I thank you Rosalee for bringing her in because I didn't know her! I just bought her book, and like you said, every little piece is precious and inspiring. :-)

What a wonderful interview! Thank you both for the wealth of information and just joyous enthusiasm about herbs and especially the mushroom! I have been taking turkey tail and drinking reishi tea for about two months before a three week long trip to Europe...and, I believe that injesting both mushrooms has helped me stay healthy during the trip. I have always talked to plants, grow veggies and generally being outside with my feet on the soil that makes me so happy (and its grounding my energy!)
  • This is one of the best podcasts I've listened to! I have Hashimoto's and had been completely confused as to what or whether to take as an immune modulator! I did some research on immune modulators and reishi has been at the top of the list! I love all of the gentle information you have given us, and we thank you so much!!
  • What a great and inspiring interview today. Don't get me wrong, I watch all of your videos, and they all have been wonderful. Today was especially enlightening. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your time in doing this for the viewers. I first discovered you and John on Learning Herbs, and I have been hooked ever since. I have learned so much helpful knowledge on my herbal path. Thank you again for putting this forth.
  • @opheliabells
Reishi smells like chocolate too me so it always makes sense to add it to sweets like this, and the young reishi looks like marshmallow fluff. 🍫🍫 love this and will check that book out. and I add reishi powder to my cookies. but cannot wait to try this decoction out.
  • I loved this podcast! You and Asia are two of my favorite herbalists and I am such a mushroom worshiper!!! I really want to make that recipe and read her book! I was wondering if you (either of you) could make some content for those of us who are young herbalists? I'm thinking teenagers to early twenties. I feel a little alone in this journey as a young herbalist and would be so thrilled to hear what you could share with us. Again, thank you for everything that you shared today, I absolutely soaked it in. ❤🍄🌿

What a beautiful, magical interview! Thank you so much Rosalee and Asia! Rosalee, I LOVE the gifts you offer as you share your own herbal love, knowledge, practices and wisdom in your bookS (yay! I'm savoring Alchemy of Herbs as I read it cover to cover and am so thrilled to have Wild Remedies waiting in the wings!), videos and courses and have been immersing myself since first finding your sharing. But to have the alchemical gifts that come of you interviewing some of YOUR favorite herbal folk is pure joy for me! This particular interview that you and Asia share uplifts and teaches me so much in my own journey in life on this amazing living earth. I so look forward to "settling my little shen" with reishi as my introduction to the "reishi tree", trying this delectable, magical recipe and trying watering my plants with water I've first held in love! Thank you both from the bottom of my heart.
  • Awesome! I love reishi, especially after a very good flush this year. I have a nagging question: many herbalists t all about ganoderma lucidum and tsugae interchangeably, but is ther any proof that they are actually identical in phytochemistry? Google has been unhelpful with this question.
  • @anamajcen6892
What a beautiful episode, thanks so much! I have never used reishi but will definitely start after hearing this. One question: is it ok for kids to occasionally take it? I want to make the truffles but if I do I know that my daughter will want to have some too. Thanks!
  • @platformblues
Regarding how tough reishi is when dried, I know someone who processes whole dried conk-like mushrooms in a wood chipper 😆
