H1MIN: RUHRSTAHL X-4 WIRE GUIDED MISSILE

Published 2021-07-29
The Rurhstahl X-4 was a liquid fueled, wire guided, air-to-air missile in development by Germany in WWII. While too late to have any impact, it did provide research into the future development of wire guided missile technology.

By late 1944 about 1,300 missile assemblies had been built, but the factory making the motors had been heavily bombed leaving few motors to be used. Ironically, the Allied bomber formations that these missiles were intended for destroyed the capability of these missiles from reaching Luftwaffe units.

  • Great animations as always, and on such an obscure weapon. Great information on this I always wondered how the early prototype guided missiles worked

Its amazing how fast technology moved during WW2. Something that would be considered science fiction in 1939 was almost functional 5 years later

Could you please make a video on the ASM-N-2 Bat? It is a world war 2 radar guided anti ship fire and forget glide bomb/missle deployed by the U.S. navy at the end of the war. It was at least 15 years ahead of its time. It is absolutely insane.
  • I can imagine there's a risk that the wire could get entangled in the interceptor's propellers.
