A study by the V-Dem Institute revealed that by 2023, 71% of the world's population was living under authoritarian regimes, marking a 48% increase in just a decade since 2013.

According to senior journalist and 2021 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa, this trend is not a coincidence. She believes that leaders in information technology must be held accountable because the exploitation of lies, hatred, and shallow thinking on social media is at the core of today's democratic crises.

Maria is the founder of Rappler, an independent news channel established in 2012 in the Philippines to champion press freedom as a cornerstone of democracy. Among her notable works are "How to Stand Up to a Dictator: The Fight for Our Future" (2022), "From Bin Laden to Facebook: 10 Days of Abduction, 10 Years of Terrorism" (2013), and "Seeds of Terror: An Eyewitness Account of Al-Qaeda's Newest Center" (2003).

    1. 38 Years of Journalism 02:13 - Personal background and early career I like calling myself a boundary-spanner. 06:29 - Southeast Asia’s democracy and culture in the eyes of Maria We (Southeast Asians) suppress individual needs for a greater good. 07:24 - Maria’s Books You don’t really know who you are until you are forced to stand up for yourself. • [08:40] 📕 “Seeds of Terror” (2003) • [10:38] 📘 “From Bin Laden to Facebook” (2013) I became a journalist because I long known that information is power. If you don't have the right information you cannot take the right steps forward. • [13:30] 📗 “How to Stand Up To a Dictator” (2022) The growth of extremism, which I tried to track in counterterrorism, is now happening in the political world. The more powerful dictator (then Duterte) is Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook. 🔗 Get Maria’s book from Periplus bookstore here: https://www.periplus.com/p/9780753559208 2. Democracy & Algorithm 15:28 - Democracy in the Post-truth Era • [16:39] Information system: A watershed metaphor⭐ • [17:36] MIT 2018 finding: Lies spread 6 times faster than facts. Rappler additional finding https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/maria-ressa-a-thousand-cuts-documentary-social-media-disinformation-democracy/ : It spreads even faster when it’s wrapped with anger and hatred. • [18:31] The root cause of the decline of democracy: The business model of social media. 🏷 “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism” (2018) by Shoshana Zuboff Surveillance capitalism extracts “our private lives for outsized corporate gain. Our personal experiences sucked into a database organized by AI then sold to the highest bidder. Highly profitable, micro targeting operations are engineered to structurally undermine human will.” Your weakest moment to a message is sold to a company, that's called advertising, or to a country, that's called information operations, … this I began calling insidious manipulation. 🔖 A study by the V-Dem Institute revealed that by 2023, 71% of the world's population was living under authoritarian regimes, marking a 48% increase in just a decade since 2013. More about the report: https://www.v-dem.net/publications/democracy-reports/ • [23:05] Generative AI and democracy 3. ‘The Silent Atomic Bomb’ 🔗 Maria’s Nobel Speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1w3rRRBoq8 24:48 - Democratic decay, social media algorithm, and the rise of authoritarianism • [25:57] The abdication of responsibility for protecting the public sphere comes in two places: Big tech and democratic government. Our information ecosystem has been destroyed. It's hard for any government to govern well at this point in time because what has been destroyed is trust. • [27:45] Why are we seeing wars again today?🎬 28:57 - Leadership in the Age of ‘Insidious Information’ • [29:17] Generation gap and propaganda in triggering war What's happening in Gaza is now polarizing generations. • [30:12] Content moderation The code that is now ruling the world was created in Silicon Valley and in China … and then who did the content moderation to clean up the machine? That came from the Global South, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Africa. • [30:46] Christopher Wylie: Colonialism never dies, it’s just moved online. 31:15 - The Hope • The government actually needs to clean up the public sphere. • The problem is that the big companies argue that they are protecting free speech. 32:56 - The death of journalism and why it’s minacious • [34:54] Maria’s work to support independent journalism • [36:03] MS: I don’t want us to lose our faith of humanity. 4. Paradox & Inequality 🔗 Gita on the paradox of internet, AI, and sustainability in the context of the current geopolitical situation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipzt9DEgAuQ 36:38 - GW on the paradox of the internet and AI 38:18 - A widening gap of inequality fuels fear, anger, hate: ‘The Rise of Illiberalism’ 40:11 - The Hallucination of AI AI is neither artificial nor is it intelligent. 5. The Way Out 41:37 - The Way Out: 1. Stop surveillance for profit 2. Stop coded bias 3. Journalism as an antidote to tyranny 🔗 Watch her full lecture on this solution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j1T1PfApZg 44:07- The evolution of the commodification of human beings and its socio-psychological impact 45:00 - Existential threat (incl. climate change) of disinformation How can we solve climate change issues if we don't have the information to do that? 6. Short, Mid, Longterm Strategy 45:45 - The Cure • Short term: Stop being a user and start becoming a citizen. We need to mobilize beyond elections. • Medium-term: Legislation → Building the guardrail for the development of information tech • Long-term: Improving the education system 51:01 - GW: The European is winning the slow turtle race 53:07 - MR: We (civil society) need to decide what kind of world we want to live in. The problem is that … civil society moves at the pace of human comprehension and human empathy, but what we are fighting—technology—moves at the speed of light and so it's been a hard catch-up. … the minute you make the tech companies responsible for what they are feeding us then it will stop. 7. Maria’s Philosophy of Life 56:08 - Live up your values, embrace your fears, and plan your steps ahead I'm old enough that I've lived a life of no regrets. 1:00:11 - What makes Maria happy END OF CONVERSATION 📌 https://sgpp.me/eps180notes

3:39 : "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know" quotes yang hampir selalu didengar dari orang-orang yang beneran pinter.
  • @V-Estevicia

  • @Chocobollz
I'm only 5 minutes in and I've already captivated. Her story is absolutely need to be heard and I'm here to listen. Thank you for always delivering stellar contents, "Pak Gita" 🤭❤
  • @gelatiknae6499
Pak Gita, thank you untuk episode endgame kali ini. Berasa kuliah gratis. Daging semua. 🙏
  • @decentralizard
Saya orang Indonesia. Just want to comment about the tangible solution for democratization of what Ressa said by "incentive structure", our movement developing, building and testing it in silence on distributed ledger and blockchain ecosystem network. Our movement subversively against the big tech by utilizing the web3 interoperability. I hope Ressa doesn't lose hope for progressive technologies, because I kinda heard this tone from her. Digital democratization is POSSIBLE with progressive web3 technologies ❤
  • @khairurejal
Interesting idea correlating on the prevalence of social media and dictatorial regime …
